Olympics24 : Soccer kicks off at Paris Olympics with huge controversy as Argentina lose , Spain win

Football has commenced at the Paris Olympics. The Games will officially open on July 26, but some events have already started. On Wednesday, countries like Spain and Argentina began their participation in the Olympic football competition. Spain started with a victory in their first match, defeating Uzbekistan 2-1. Argentina, however, drew 2-2 with Morocco.

In the Olympics, all countries compete with under-23 teams, but each team is allowed to include three senior players. On Wednesday, recent Euro champion Spain played their first match against Uzbekistan. Spain took the lead through a goal by Marc Pubill, but Eldor Shomurodov of Uzbekistan equalized with a penalty. At one point, it seemed the match would end in a draw. In the 59th minute, Sergio Gomez missed a penalty, but three minutes later, he redeemed himself by scoring from a 12-yard shot, securing the win for Spain.

Argentina faced defeat in their first match at the Paris Olympics, losing to Morocco. The match was filled with drama, including a two-hour suspension. Argentina's initial goal was disallowed, and they eventually lost 1-2 to Morocco. Until the 67th minute, Argentina trailed 0-2, but Giuliano Simeone scored to reduce the deficit. Morocco was still leading in regular time, but 15 minutes of added time were given, during which Medina scored to equalize for Argentina, leading to a bottle-throwing incident.

The match was halted as fireworks were thrown at the Argentinian players, and Moroccan fans stormed the field. The official Paris Olympics site listed the match as "disrupted." After a two-hour suspension, play resumed, but the referee disallowed Medina's goal after consulting VAR. The match ended shortly after the restart, resulting in a loss for Argentina.

The match took place at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard in Saint-Étienne, France. Moroccan fans became unruly after the added-time goal, causing police intervention and the evacuation of the stands. Measures are expected to be taken against the fans who invaded the pitch.
