Its official , Gautam Gambhir next head coach of Team India !!
The speculation is over. Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the head coach of the Indian cricket team by the Board of Cricket in India (BCCI). For several days, rumors suggested that Gambhir was the preferred candidate to succeed Rahul Dravid, with strong support from Jay Shah and Roger Binny. The former left-handed opener was also eager to take on the role. On Tuesday, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah officially announced Gambhir's appointment. Another former cricketer, WV Raman, was also in contention for the position.
Shah Rukh Khan, one of the leaders of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), initially stood in the way of Gambhir's appointment. Shah Rukh wanted to retain Gambhir as a mentor to help the team achieve success. Under Gambhir's mentorship, KKR won the IPL championship again after 10 years. It was reported that Shah Rukh secured Gambhir’s services for KKR for a decade and was willing to spend any amount to keep him. However, he eventually agreed to release Gambhir for the national team for the sake of the country.
Gambhir's success as a mentor in the IPL, his good rapport with Indian cricketers, and his clear understanding of India's cricketing infrastructure were key factors in his selection. He mentored the IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants in 2022 and 2023, leading them to the playoffs both times. In 2024, he took over as the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders, and under his guidance, Shreyas Iyer led the team to an IPL championship in his first year. Gambhir had previously captained KKR to IPL championships in 2012 and 2014. He was also a member of India's 2007 and 2011 World Cup-winning teams.
