Suryakumar Yadav catapulted to T20I captain by Gambhir as teams are announced for Sri Lanka tour
As soon as he took on the role of coach, Gautam Gambhir made surprising selections for the team. Suryakumar Yadav has been named the captain of the Indian T20 team, putting all speculations to rest. However, despite various discussions about potential candidates for the ODI team captaincy, Rohit Sharma will lead the team in the series against Sri Lanka. This series will also feature Virat Kohli.
After becoming the coach, Gambhir had discussions with the selectors on Wednesday. He insisted that Rohit Sharma should be brought back for the Sri Lanka tour. Team India is set to play only six ODI matches before the 2025 Champions Trophy, the first three of which will be against Sri Lanka. Gambhir wants to field the best eleven in these six matches. He understands it will take some time to build a good rapport with Captain Rohit, which is why he has also brought back Virat Kohli.
The real surprise came in the T20 team selection. There had been rumours that Coach Gambhir wanted Suryakumar Yadav to replace Hardik Pandya as captain. This matter was also discussed with Rohit Sharma, who supported Suryakumar's captaincy. However, Hardik Pandya was not pleased with this decision. Despite that, Suryakumar, Hardik’s teammate from Mumbai Indians, was chosen as the T20 captain. Additionally, KKR pacer Harshit Rana was unexpectedly included in the ODI squad.
