Olympics24 : Top tennis stars advance to 2nd round
Three stars competed on the same day at the Olympics and all emerged victorious. Iga Świątek, Carlos Alcaraz, and Novak Djokovic each began their Olympic campaigns with wins. All three matches were held on Roland Garros' center court.
Two months ago, Świątek and Alcaraz had won trophies on this very court. Both played dominantly in their respective matches. On the other hand, Djokovic is aiming for his first Olympic medal.
Świątek faced Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu, winning 6-2, 7-5. Alcaraz defeated Lebanon's Hady Habib 6-3, 6-1. Djokovic also won in straight sets, defeating Australia's Matthew Ebden, the Olympic doubles top seed, in less than an hour. Djokovic triumphed with a score of 6-0, 6-1. Notably, Ebden got the chance to play in the Olympic singles due to Holger Rune's withdrawal; otherwise, he was only set to play doubles.
Seven weeks after winning the French Open, Świątek was broken in the second set and fell behind 3-5. However, she made a comeback. Świątek's dominance on clay courts in women's tennis is well known, and her experience helped her recover and win the match.
