Manu Bhaker won the bronze medal in the women's 10-meter air pistol event. She secured India's first medal at the Paris Olympics, missing the silver by just 0.1 points. Expectations were high for Manu from the beginning, and she fulfilled them by winning a medal for the country. She became the first Indian woman shooter to win an Olympic medal.
South Korea's Oh Ye Jin won the gold medal in the women's 10-meter air pistol event, setting an Olympic record with a score of 243.2. The silver medal was won by South Korea's Kim Yeji, who scored 241.3. Manu's final score was 221.7. Before the last two shots, Yeji had a score of 221.8. Thus, Manu finished with the bronze by a margin of 0.1 points. In her last shot, Manu scored 10.3, while Yeji scored 10.5. Even if she had scored 10.2, the shooter from Haryana could have won the silver medal.
There were high expectations for the shooter from Haryana from the start. Manu reached the finals after finishing third in the qualification round on Saturday. She also finished third in the finals. However, the points from the qualification round were not added to the finals. Unlike Saturday, Manu could not maintain consistency in the finals, scoring below 10 in seven shots, including one shot with a score of 9.5 and three shots with a score of 9.6. After the first stage, Manu fell behind in the race for the gold medal. Despite this, she managed to handle the pressure and performed well in the second stage, securing a medal for the country.
The last time India won a medal in shooting at the Olympics was in 2012, when Gagan Narang won a bronze in the London Olympics. Since then, India had not won a medal in shooting in two Olympics. Manu Bhaker ended this drought, winning a bronze medal and making the nation proud.
After Manu Bhaker, Ramita Jindal has brightened the medal hopes in shooting. On Sunday, she advanced to the finals of the women's 10-meter air rifle event. In the preliminary round, Ramita finished in fifth place.
Among 43 competitors, Ramita secured her spot in the women's air rifle final by finishing fifth. Her score after six rounds was 631.5. She maintained consistency right from the first round.
As expected, PV Sindhu started the Paris Olympics with a victory. In the group stage of the women's singles badminton event, she won her first match easily. She defeated Maldives' Fatimath Nabaha by a score of 21-9, 21-6.
