Olympics24 : India escape defeat vs Argentina with late goal in Hockey

In their second match of the Olympic hockey tournament, India drew 1-1 against Argentina. After trailing for most of the match against the 2016 Olympic champions, Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh equalized. However, India's wasted penalty corner opportunities and defensive mindset are causes for concern. Lucas Martinez put Argentina ahead, and Harmanpreet Singh scored the equalizer.

India received a penalty corner early in the first quarter but failed to capitalize on it. At that moment, Harmanpreet Singh was off the field with a green card, a decision he was not happy with. Sandeep missed the penalty corner. Towards the end of the first quarter, Argentina also got a penalty corner but squandered their chance.

In the second quarter, India's performance worsened. They got three consecutive penalty corners but failed to convert any. Credit is also due to Argentina's goalkeeper, who saved two attempts. Shortly after, Argentina scored in the 23rd minute. There were defensive errors from India, including a mistake by PR Sreejesh. Indian defenders allowed Lucas Martinez to enter the circle without opposition. Martinez passed to the second post, and as Sreejesh tried to block it, the ball deflected off his stick into his own goal.

After scoring, Argentina became even more aggressive, while India retreated into a defensive shell, playing only square and back passes and failing to penetrate Argentina's circle. In the third quarter, Argentina's goalkeeper saved a shot from India's Sukjit Singh. In the 37th minute, Argentina earned a penalty stroke after Maico Casella's shot hit an Indian player, but Casella's attempt went wide.

India did not play well in the fourth quarter either. Harmanpreet Singh and Manpreet Singh, two of India's best players, were not in top form, affecting the team's performance. Towards the end, India got several penalty corners, and Harmanpreet scored from the third one.
