Video : Cyclone ravages Queensland in Australia, crocodile in flood waters

Queensland in Australia is in the worst condition due to Cyclonic Storm Jasper.  Heavy rains have caused flooding here, disrupting life in tourist-popular cities in the north-east of Australia along the Great Barrier Reef.  Many people have been evacuated to safe places.  Due to the rapidly rising water level, people living near rivers are stranded on the roofs of their houses.

According to reports, a crocodile was seen in a residential area in Queensland on Monday.  However, it was caught in time.  Speaking to ABC television, Queensland state premier Steven Miles expressed concern, saying the situation is bad at the moment and we are waiting for the rain to stop.  Air support will not be available at remote places here.  He said that for the last one week, rain, strong winds and floods have caused huge devastation across the state.

A crocodile was caught from a rain drain. He said that this is the worst disaster.  Reports say that roads are submerged in water due to floods in Ingham town and a crocodile was also caught from a rain drain here.  It is not unusual to see crocodiles in rural areas such as rivers, lagoons and swamps in North Queensland, but it is unusual to see crocodiles in storm drains.  Also Cairns, a major city that serves as the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef;  It has rained heavily here.  Nearly 600 mm (about 24 inches) of rain fell in just 40 hours till Monday, which is more than three times the December average of 182 mm (7.17 inches).

All flights at Cairns Airport were cancelled or postponed, and images on social media showed planes partially submerged on the tarmac.  Despite efforts to drain the water, the airport struggled to deal with the amount of water.

A warning of major floods has been issued in this area of Australia.  There is a possibility of breaking the record of 1977 here.  The region is expected to experience more rain as Jasper continues into Monday, with the forecast calling for some locations to see up to 300 mm (12 inches) of rain within six hours.  The impact of the floods extended to power cuts, affecting more than 14,000 properties across the region.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that defense forces were ready to begin rescue and relief efforts.  This extreme weather event comes as Australia grapples with the El Nino weather phenomenon, which is contributing to a variety of extreme weather conditions ranging from flooding in the northeast to bushfire warnings in the southeast, where Sydney's  Temperatures are expected to exceed 40 °C (104 °F) in some suburbs.
