Fiery Cummins leads Australia to a gripping 2nd test & series win over Pakistan
Pakistan fought hard but finally lost the 2nd test to Australia after a tense 4th day . The team collapsed on the fourth day in the Melbourne Test final session after a fighting contest . Australia won the test match by 79 runs and with this also won the 3 test match series. In Melbourne, Australia had set a target of 317 runs for Pakistan, in response to which it could score only 237 runs in the second innings. Earlier, Australia had scored 318 runs in the first innings. In reply, Pakistan could score 264 runs. The Australian team had scored 262 runs in its second innings.
After a huge defeat by 360 runs in the first Test played in Perth, Pakistan had a golden opportunity to win the Melbourne Test. The target was 317 runs, for which he had two full days to achieve. But, all the planning of Pakistan went in vain in front of Australian bowlers. The result was that they could not save the series from losing.
The day 4 started with Alex Carey playing a fluent knock of 52 runs that finally took the Australia second innings score to 264 . Cummins (16) and Starc (11) added crucial runs . For Pakistan Shaheen & Hamza took 4 wickets each .
Chasing the target of 317 runs, Pakistan's second innings did not start well. Their opening pair broke for just 8 runs. Both the openers had returned to the pavilion within 50 runs. Starc had Shafique (4) caught in slips while Imam (12) was lbw to Cummins . All the hopes rested on those two batsmen who were also the biggest batsmen of the team. One of them was captain Shan Masood and the other was former captain Babar Azam.
Shan Masood and Babar Azam together added 61 runs for the third wicket. Shan Masood scored 60 runs on 71 balls that included classy drives , flicks and stepped out shots of Lyon while Babar Azam scored 41 runs on 79 balls. Masood was caught in the slips off Cummins and then Hazlewood bowled Babar with an incutter . For Pakistan, Salman Agha also batted strongly and scored 50 runs. Even when he was playing with Mohammad Rizwan, there was a ray of hope for Pakistan. But in the match, whenever it seemed that Pakistan was making a comeback, the Australian bowlers took wickets and again pushed them on the backfoot.
Rizwan (35) was adjudged caught behind of Cummins with the ball brushing the glove elastic band . Once Salman was out to a short ball of Starc the rest fell in quick succession to short ball tactics .
For Australia, captain Pat Cummins took 5 wickets in the second innings. Before this, he also took 5 wickets in the first innings. Meaning, he did the amazing job of taking 10 wickets in the Melbourne Test. For this success, Cummins was also chosen Player of the Match.
