Cyclone Michuang ravages south east coastal areas. Andhra , Chennai badly affected
The latest cyclone has absolutely ravaged the affected coastal areas of the southern states Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh
Sometimes knee-deep water, sometimes waist-deep. Somewhere the road is like a torrential river! Even before the arrival of Cyclone Michuang, torrential rains started over the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Chennai. As the storm moved toward the coast, the rain intensified.
The administration had earlier issued a warning about Cyclone Michuang . A final warning of heavy to very heavy rains has been issued in coastal districts of Tamil Nadu as well as Chennai. Very heavy rain started in Chennai from Sunday. In a few hours, the rain completely changed the face of Chennai.
More than 200 millimeters of rain fell in most parts of Chennai on December 3 and 4, the weather update said. This is the first time since the 2015 flood.
The Tamil Nadu government had earlier declared a holiday in all schools and colleges in four districts — Chennai, Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur and Chengalpet — on Tuesday and Wednesday due to heavy rains and subsequent flooding.
According to the administration sources, 12 people died in Chennai due to two days of rain and the resulting flood situation. Major parts of the city like Kotturpuram, Muthialpet, Tambaram, Ashoknagar, Kattupakkam, Perunguri have gone under several feet of water.
Power supply has been cut since Sunday as most areas of the city went under water. Drinking water problem has also started in some places. The State Disaster Response Force and the National Disaster Response Force have started rescue operations as well as distribution of relief in flooded areas.
Due to heavy rains the situation reached such a level that a part of the Chennai airport was submerged. The runway was knee-deep in water. Air services are also disrupted as a result. However, since Tuesday, the rain has subsided and air traffic has started again.
According to the Meteorological Department, the heaviest rainfall was at Perunguri in Chennai (450 mm), Poonamallee in Tiruvallur district (340 mm), Avari (280 mm).
Chennai Purnigam has brought in 5,000 workers from neighboring districts for rescue operations in the submerged city. They are transporting residents from low-lying areas to safe places with tractors and boats. They are also working to distribute relief to the flooded areas of Periamet and North Chennai.
Cyclone Migzaum hit Bapatala in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday afternoon. Mausam Bhavan said that the rampage will continue for three hours. This cyclone hit at a speed of 90-100 km per hour. The maximum speed was 110 km.
Due to this cyclone, the state administration has issued final alert in eight districts of Andhra Pradesh. Those eight districts are — Tirupati, Nellore, Prakasam, Bapatala, Krishna, West Godavari, Konaseema and Kakinanda. Section 144 has been imposed in coastal areas in Puducherry till 6 pm.
According to Mausam Bhavan, 300-400 mm of rain is likely to fall in the coastal cities of Andhra Pradesh under the influence of the cyclone. According to local administration sources, many houses have been washed away in coastal areas due to strong winds. Trees, power poles were uprooted.
