IPL 2024 auctions : A brief look at all the team lists

The players were auctioned for the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).  This is the first time the auction took place outside India.  There were many big names in the teams' hit list, especially Australia's top three players - Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Travis Head.  Starc and Cummins created history and became the most expensive players in auction history.  Both were bid for more than Rs 20 crore each.

 Starc was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 24.75 crore, while Cummins was included in their team by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 20.5 crore.  For the first time the figure of Rs 20 crore has been crossed in an auction.  Apart from this, money also rained on Daryl Mitchell (14 cr)  and India's Harshal Patel (11.5 cr)   Mitchell had performed brilliantly in the ODI World Cup.

We now look at the strengths & weaknesses of the 10 teams post the auction 

IPL 2024 teams and full squads

Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

CSK as usual is a settled unit and they do not make too many moves in yearly auctions . This year they had two fabulous additions in Daryll Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra to cover up one vacant spot of Rayudu . Mustafizur is a good buy for them considering his skillsets for slower Chennai pitches and Shardul Thakur comes in to provide the pace all rounder option in case Deepak Chahar has injury worries . In Sameer Rizvi they got a domestic cricket boundary hitter

Delhi Capitals (DC)

Delhi has a strong all round  IPL  team already and further replenished by Harry Brook , Jhye Richardson  & Tristan Stubbs . Shai Hope 's inclusion will help the batting  on slower wickets. Nortje's injury worries may have made them go for Jhye Richardson

Gujarat Titans (GT) 

Titans lost their skipper Hardik Pandya in trade unexpectedly and now will have a new skipper in young Shubman Gill . They have replenished their pace stocks with Umesh Yadav , Kartick Tyagi and Aussie left arm  quick Spencer Johnson to cover up for the losses of Pandya and Alzarri Joseph . They have roped in promising Afghan all rounder Omerzai. Rest of the team is stable

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

KKR has made some adjustments in both batting and bowling getting back old guard  Manish Pandey in the middle order.  Mujeeb is added as another mystery spinner in case Sunil Narine struggles for form . However their biggest and most famous as well as the historical buy was Mitchell Starc . One hopes that Starc is able to measure up to his outrageously high bidding and show consistency as well as take regular wickets . KKR also roped in Atkinson whose high pace can be used if and when Starc is rested .

Mumbai Indians (MI)

Mumbai Indians already have a strong batting core and they have taken Hardik Pandya back from Gujarat  Titans and made him captain . They have strengthened their pace bowling attack in this auction which was lacking depth in last two seasons.  They had to spend only around 10 crores to get Gerald Coetzee and Dilshan Madhusanka both of whom had a stellar ODI world cup . In the spin department they roped in leggie Shreyas Gopal and Mohammed Nabi both of whom can bat too . They also bought hard hitting Romario Shephard as a replacement for traded Cameron Green .  Hence MI concentrated in improving their bowling attack and looks a formidable outfit post this auction .

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)

RCB in an effort to boost their pace attack  went hard for Cummins but could not succeed.  Instead they went for Alzarri Joseph and Lockie Furgusion and also surprisingly took Yash Dayal who conceded 5 sixes to Rinku Singh in last season . They went for Tom Curran to replace Harshal Patel . Cameron Green will definitely boost their batting . Overall RCB got marginally stronger but they will miss Hasaranga and did not have a great auction

Rajasthan Royals (RR) 

Rajasthan to improve their middle order  firepower took Rovman Powell . They also bought Nandre Burger the left arm tearaway from South Africa to strengthen their bowling reserves . The team is already supremely balanced to make any excess additions and thus they had a quiet auction .

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) 

Sunrisers had the most active auction and took Cummins at record amount . They also took Hasaranga to bolster their spin department. To improve their opening batting they roped in World cup final hero Travis Head . With some 7-8 top class overseas players choose from they will have a big headache in getting their combinations right though they have a strong squad with good depth .
