Top 5 run getters & wicket takers for India in ODI World cup history
The latest edition of ODI World cup is going to start after a few more hours wait . India is hosting their 4th world cup and this time it is hosted exclusively in India . All the previous editions 1987, 1996 & 2011 were hosted by India along with another neighbouring country.
As the World cup is about to start , let us briefly look at the top 5 run getters and top 5 wicket takers of India in world cup history .
Amongst the top 5 run getters , Sachin Tendulkar is head and shoulders above the rest . Sachin played a total of 6 world cups in succession from 1992 to 2011 and after missing out on 5 , he finally was a part of the winning team in 2011 . As we can see in below table , Sachin amassed 2278 runs at 56.95 average and almost 89 strike rate with 6 hundreds in the world cups . His best world cup was arguably 673 runs in South Africa in 2003 in which India finished as runner up .
At number two is Virat Kohli with 1030 runs in the 3 world cups he played since 2011 . Virat averages 46.81 in ODI world cups along a strike rate of 86.70 and he scored 2 hundreds , one each in 2011 & 2015 . A young Virat was a part of the world cup winning team of 2011 .
At number 3 is Sourav Ganguly who amassed 1006 runs at 55.88 with 4 centuries and 77.50 strike rate in the 3 world cups he played in 1999, 2003 & 2007 . Ganguly was the captain in 2003 and finished as runner up . He scored 2 centuries in that 2003 world cup with one in the semis . He also scored a blistering 183 in the 1999 group game against the then reigning champions Sri Lanka .
At number 4 is the current Indian captain , Rohit Sharma who has an outstanding world cup record of 978 runs at 65.20 average and a staggering 95.97 strike rate in just 2 world cups that he played . To maintain such a high average at such a huge strike rate is awesome . Rohit has 6 centuries of which 5 were scored in the 2019 World cup alone which included big hundreds vs South Africa and Pakistan.
At number 5 it is Rahul Dravid, who played in 3 world cups and scored 860 runs at 61.42 average and 74.97 strike rate with 2 hundreds . David's best world cup was in 1999 in England

Mohammed Shami and Anil Kumble with 31 wickets each follows next with Shami in 2 world cups averaging an outstanding 15.10 along with a low strike rate of 18.61 while Kumble averaged 22.83 with an impressive 33.52 strike rate in 4 world cups
The top 5 spot is completed by none other than Kapil Dev who has taken 28 wickets at 31.85 average and 50 strike rate . The great Kapil Dev played in 4 world cups and was the winner in 1983 with him being the captain .
