CWC2023: Conway - Ravindra twin tons annihilate England as New Zealand start with big win
New Zealand started their 2023 ODI World cup campaign with a clinical 9 wicket win over subdued England and get adequate revenge for their 2019 controversial loss in the world cup final at Lords. Chasing England 's score of 282 , the Kiwis lost one wicket very early but the two left handers Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra batted in spectacular fashion to script a crushing 9 wicket win with 14 overs left .
Winning the toss and batting first in front of near empty stands , England started in style with Bairstow hitting Boult over square leg for 6 but the Kiwi bowlers bowled tight and did not allow the England openers any freedom to score which affected the reigning champions.
Malan (14) was caught behind off Henry cheaply and after a while Bairstow went for 33 caught in the deep off Santner . Joe Root settled down well but he kept losing partners with Harry Brook (25) and Moeen (11) promising much but delivering little. However skipper Jos Buttler and Root got into a 70 run stand to rescue England from 118 /4 and just when it seemed that Buttler was getting his bearings , he was dismissed by Henry for 43. Livingstone (20) and Sam Curran (14) had brief stays and finally Root who was steadily moving to 3 figures , lost his patience and was bowled by par timer Glenn Phillips trying for reverse sweep for 77 off 86 balls . Woakes (11) went cheaply but England were helped by a last wicket stand between Rashid (15) and Mark Wood (13) who took England from 252/9 to 281/9 in 50 overs .
For New Zealand Henry got 3/48 while Santner and Phillips got 2 wickets each .
In reply New Zealand lost Young (0) to Curran but Devon Conway showed his class which has made him the best all format player in the world . Conway got into a brilliant partnership with another left handed Rachin Ravindra who replaced Ferguson in the original XI for the match due to a niggle to the bowler . Ravindra showed his promise and ability by unleashing dazzling shots all around the wicket . His footwork against spin and his ability to play pace stood out as he pulled Wood for a blistering 6 over square leg . Ravindra hit the spinners for huge sixes as New Zealand motored along . Soon Conway was timing the shots well as he played couple of glorious straight drives as the crowd which increased towards the evening started to enjoy the Kiwi reply . Conway started to unleash his shots as England wilted under the onslaught of the two left handers. The team milestones and personal milestones came one after the other as England bowling looked totally flat and exposed on a pitch offering no movement in contrast to the first innings in which the New Zealand bowlers looked more convincing
New Zealand won by 9 wickets in the 37th over with Conway (152*) and player of the match Ravindra (123*) completing a dazzling partnership of 273 runs unbeaten. The Kiwis not only ended the game early , they also improved their net run rate which will serve them well during the league stage .
