India vs Australia: ODI World cup head to head history & Preview

India is to clash with  Australia in a mega match  in ODI World cup 2023 . The whole of cricket world is waiting for this big  match . As we know both the teams are top favourites to with this mega event . Their latest world cup clash will be at Chennai and both teams have played some epic matches here between themselves.  The most famous one was the tied test in 1986 and their first leg world cup clash in 1987 which Australia won by just one run.

India and Australia faced each other 149 times in ODIs in which Australia is leading head to head by 83-56 with 10 no results . In ODI world cups India faced Australia 12 times and it is 8-4 in favour of Australia.

In 1983 World cup , Australia crushed India by 162 runs in their 1st leg match but India won the all important 2nd leg match by 118 runs to reach the semis with Binny and Madan Lal taking 4 wickets each.

In 1987 Australia beat India in the 1st leg group match by just 1 run at Chennai when Geoff Marsh got a 100 but India beat Australia convincingly at Delhi to confirm semis spot

In 1992 World cup both teams played another epic match with Australia won by 1 run at Brisbane

In 1996 at Mumbai brilliant batting by Tendulkar was in vain as Australia beat India by 16 runs in a thriller

In 1999 & 2003 World cups , Australia beat India in all 3 matches convincingly in total domination including 2003 final when Ponting smashed 140 notout

India finally beat Australia in an exciting match  in the 2011 quarter finals due to Yuvraj Singh all round show but Australia extracted sweet revenge in 2015 semis with a convincing win due to Steve Smith 100 .

Finally in the 2019 World cup Shikhar Dhawan 117 saw India beat Australia by 36 runs in a high scoring game to set the head to head world cup scoreline at 8-4 in favour of Australia .

As for their 13th World cup clash, India playing at home appears to be slight favourites with their stronger spin attack which may work at Chennai .

However India is likely to miss the services of Shubman Gill who is down with dengue fever but on the road to recovery . If Gill misses out Ishan Kishan is likely to open with Rohit . India is likely to play 3 spinners with Jadeja , Ashwin and Kuldeep while Bumrah , Siraj and Hardik are likely to be 3 pacers . India's concern is lower order batting and they would like more productivity from Jadeja and Ashwin

For Australia the only spot up for grabs is between  Green and Stoinis . Marcus Stoinis has some injury issues and a lot depends on his recovery . Australia is likely to lay their big 3 quicks Starc , Hazlewood and Cummins while Zampa and Maxwell are expected to carry the spin duties .

Both teams look full of in form players and hence another epic India v Australia battle at Chennai is on the cards since both teams have some history at this venue
