CWC2023: Pakistan outclass Bangladesh, keeps slim hopes of semis alive

Pakistan played a more positive brand of cricket at Eden Gardens to outclass Bangladesh by 7 wickets with 18 overs to spare to not only register an important win but also improve their NRR. Quality bowling by the pacers and good start by their openers helped Pakistan to register an emphatic win against a highly mediocre Bangladesh team.

Batting first Bangladesh started poorly with Tanzid(0) , Shanto (4) and veteran Mushfiqur (5) falling cheaply within the powerplay with Shaheen and Haris making early inroads . However Litton Das and Mahmudullah held fort and arrested any collapse by playing some pleasing shots all around the ground with a fast outfield . They added 79 runs for the 4th wicket before Litton Das (45) was out to Ifthikar to a soft dismissal .

Shakib came out and played solidly but Mahmudullah after scoring a resolute 50 was bowled by a beautiful delivery from Shaheen that came in and held its line to hit the stumps . Mahmudullah scored 56 and after a while Shakib (43) was dismissed by Haris Rauf . Only Miraz (25) scored from the lower order as Bangladesh slumped to 204 all out with both Shaheen and Wasim getting 3 wickets each and Rauf getting 2 wickets .

In reply the Pakistani openers looked in full control with Abdullah Shafique driving and flicking in sublime fashion to score 68 handsome runs while Fakhar Zaman coming back into the team smashed 7 sixes as he plundered 81 off 74 balls to get Pakistan close to the victory . The openers added 125 after which there was a concerted effort by the Pakistanis to score at a faster rate as a result of which Babar(9) sacrificed his wicket but Rizwan (26*) and Ifthikar (17*) ensured that Pakistan finish off the game in the 33rd over . Fakhar for his 81 was the player of the match.

With this win Pakistan now has reached 6 points but they need to beat both New Zealand and England to entertain any slim hopes of a semi final entry.  As for Bangladesh, their world cup 2023 aspirations are over .
