CWC2023: Bowlers , Marsh , Inglis star in Australia's emphatic 5 wkt win over Sri Lanka
Five-time World Cup winners Australia finally got into the act and registered their first win in World cup 2023 but not after a few hiccups .
The way Sri Lanka innings collapsed like a house of cards despite starting well, Sri Lanka has no choice but to blame themselves for the loss. Batting first, Sri Lanka were all out for 209 runs. In response, Australia got the winning run by losing 5 wickets. This is their first win in the World Cup this time.
The two openers Pathum Nissanka and Kushal Parera got off to a great start and played sparkling shots all around the wicket against some average Australian bowling . Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins were unfathomable for the five-time World Cup winners. Sri Lanka brought them down to a mediocre level by scoring with ease
Starc's 'mankading' efforts twice further irked the Sri Lankan openers. It seemed that Australia will struggle again in Lucknow. Of course it didn't. Sri Lanka collapsed after two openers returned. Nissanka (61) returned first brilliantly caught in the deep by Warner off Cummins . Perera after a glorious 78 also had to return being clean bowled by Cummins . Sri Lanka again slumped after a good start . From a strong 157/1 they slumped to 209 all out . No one could survive. After the two openers, nobody could score double figures except for Charit Asalanka (25) . Australia's Adam Zampa took 4 wickets for 47 runs and Cummins bowled well getting 2 wickets . Starc too got into the act picking up 2 late wickets while Maxwell got one wicket .
Sri Lanka did not start badly with the ball. An over from Dilshan Madushanka put Sri Lanka in control of the match. Madushanka dismissed David Warner(11) in the first ball of the fourth over and Steve Smith (0) in the sixth. Both batters were lbw . After losing 2 wickets for 24 runs, Australia was under pressure.
Mitchell Marsh and Marnus Labuschagne tied up for the third wicket. Both of them had a 57 runs partnership . After Marsh returned runout for a sparkling and attacking 52, Josh Inglis came to the crease. The Sri Lankan bowlers could not shake him either. Labuschagne returned for a solid 40 runs but Inglis (58) continued to bat towards the end of the match before he was caught at point off Madhusanka . However Glenn Maxwell (31 not out) and Marcus Stoinis (20 not out ) did not waste many overs and quickly finished the game with a few lusty hits to get Australia two vital points and an improved NRR .
Zampa was the player of the match for his 4 wickets . Australia next meet Pakistan in a very crucial league game to further consolidate themselves in the points table while it looks very grim now for 1996 champions Sri Lanka after 3 back to back losses .
