ODI World cup: Top 5 highest run getters and wicket takers in history

 



The ODI world cup 2023 is starting from 5th October with the big game between New Zealand and England, the two finalists of 2019 . As we await the start of the mega event , let us have a glance at the top ten rungetters and the top ten wicket takers in World cup history .


Top 5 run getters 

Amongst the top ten run getters , India's Sachin Tendulkar is head and shoulders well above the rest of the players . He amassed 2278 runs in 45 matches across 6 World cups from 1992-2011 and was the highest run getter in 3 separate World cups 1996, 2003 and 2011 . He had an outstanding strike rate of 89 and scored 6 centuries at 56 average .


Sachin was followed by 3 times world cup winner Ricky Ponting of Australia.  In 5 world cups Ponting scored 1743 runs in 46 matches at 46 average and 80 strike rate with 5 tons including the famous 140 vs India in the 2003 final .


At number 3 is Sri Lankan Kumar Sangakkara with 1532 runs in 37 games across 4 world cups with 5 centuries at an impressive 56 average and 87 strike rate .


At number 4 is  West Indian superstar Brian Lara . In 5 world cups Lara amassed 1225 runs at 42 average and 86 strike rate and 2 hundreds .


At number 5 is South African genius AB De Villiers who in 3 World cups has played 29 matches and scored 1207 runs at an outstanding average of 63 and a sensational strike rate of 117 which is the highest amongst the top 5 .de Villiers scored 4 centuries.  



Top 5 wicket takers 

Amongst the top 10 wicket takers , the first position is adorned by Glenn McGrath of Australia. In 4 world cups McGrath took 71 wickets from 39 matches at 18 average and 27 strike rate which is awesome . McGrath won 3 world cups and was always a big match player .


At number two is Sri Lanka spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan who took 68 wickets in 40 matches across 5 world cups maintaining around 19 average and 30 strike rate .


At number 3 is another Sri Lankan, Lasith Malinga who took 56 wickets in 29 games across 4 world cups at 22 average and 25 strike rate .


At number 4 is the Pakistan genius Wasim Akram  . Wasim who was a world cup winner in 1992 has taken 55 wickets in 38 matches at  35 strike rate and 23 average with his deceptive swing and lethal yorkers in 4 world cups   .


At number 5 is Mitchell Starc who in just 2 world cups has amassed a staggering 49 wickets in just 18 games at just around 15 average and an astonishing strike rate of just 19 . Starc is well poised to go past at least Wasim Akram and Malinga in the list of all time highest  wicket takers in this world cup . A very good World cup 2023 may also see him surpassing McGrath as well.
