Fire in Lucknow Rameshwaram train coach near Madurai, 9 feared dead
A major accident took place on Saturday morning near Madurai Railway Station in Tamil Nadu. Here, 9 people died in a fire in a coach of Lucknow Rameshwaram tourist train while 20 others are said to be seriously injured. According to the information received from the railway officials, some people were carrying gas cylinders illegally in the coach and were making tea inside the coach, during which the gas cylinder exploded. As soon as the information was received, fire brigade personnel from Madurai reached the spot and brought the fire under control. Officials say that some people are trapped inside the coach, efforts are being made to get them out. At the same time, the injured have been admitted to the hospital for treatment. Railways has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased.
According to officials, they were informed about the incident at around 5.15 am on Saturday when the train was stopped at Madurai Yard Junction. A private party carrying 65 passengers from Lucknow in UP boarded the private coach of the train. During this some members started using illegally smuggled LPG cylinders for preparing tea/breakfast and due to this the coach caught fire. Most of the passengers got out of the coach as soon as the fire was reported, but 9 people died while 20 others were injured. However, other coaches were saved from damage.
UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed grief over the accident. Said to give compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the family of the deceased. He said that he himself kept an eye on the incident. Taking updates every moment. Spoke to Railway Minister Ashwini Varshney.
