Four Indians in the last eight of the chess World Cup, an unprecedented event in India's chess
Indian chess players are in great form in World Chess Championship held in Baku. Vidit, Gukesh, Pragyananda, Arjuna have rocked the world of chess. There will be at least one Indian in the semi-finals.
Four of the last eight players of the World Chess Championship are Indian chess players. India has four grandmasters in the race to win the World Cup. They are Vidit Gujarathi, D Gukesh, R Pragyananda and Arjun Erigaisi. It is unprecedented for four Indians to reach such higher stages in the World Cup at the same time.
Indian chess players are in great form in the World Chess Championship held in Baku, Azerbaijan. Vidit, Gukesh Pragyananda, Arjuna shook the world of chess. Vidit became the fourth Indian to reach the last eight. Elo rating leader defeated veteran Russian Grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi to make it to the last eight. He got a relatively easy opponent in the quarter finals. World No. 23 Bidit will play against Azerbaijan's Nizat Absov, No. 97 in the world.
Gukesh's opponent in the other quarter-final is former world champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway. Pragyananda will face Arjun in the last eight. As a result, an Indian chess player is sure to go to the last four. In another quarter-final, the two American chess players Fabiano Caruana and Lenier Dominguez face each other.
Four Indian players have never reached the quarter-finals of the World Chess Championship before. Excited five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand said, “This is a historic moment for Indian chess. Many of our chess players are playing this time. They are all great players. All have the ability to reach the final.'' Anand hopes to see at least two Indians in the semi-finals. However, he did not want to mention anyone's name.
