Asia Cup Cricket 2023 Schedule, Team lists & Preview

The 2023 edition of Asia Cup is beginning from 30 August.  The latest edition will be played in 50 over mode after the previous Asia Cup in 2022  was played in T20 format and Sri Lanka  were the winners when they beat Pakistan in the final.

This time the Asia Cup is a dress rehearsal before the 2023 World cup to be held in India  with all the top Asian teams looking to set up their combinations for the mega event . This time the Asia cup will be held in hybrid model with 4 matches in Pakistan and 9 games in Sri Lanka including the final.  This had to be arranged in this  way as India was not willing to visit Pakistan for their matches due to their long standing  political differences .

Team wise analysis :

Pakistan

Pakistan has recently whitewashed Afghanistan in a 3 match ODI series and has upstaged Australia to become the number one ranked ODI team. Their batting is looking in good shape with top order scoring runs and their pace bowling attack of Shaheen Afridi , Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf looks venomous with pace as their big weapon.  They have recently played more in Sri Lankan conditions than India and also many of their players participated in the Lanka Premier league and therefore Pakistan is already well adjusted to the Sri Lankan pitches , a factor that can tilt the scales in their favour . Though India are the favourites,  Pakistan are not far behind and they are a top ODI side .

India

India looks to be the favourites in this event . Apart from Rishabh Pant , India will be in full strength and the returns from injuries of KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer,  Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna will bolster their team. With Rohit, Virat and Gill showing good nick in West Indies and the presence of quality all rounders in Hardik and Jadeja , India looks the big favourites for this Asia Cup

India

Rohit Sharma (c), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya (vc), Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumraj, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Prasidh Krishna

Travelling reserve: Sanju Samson

Afghanistan

Afghanistan is still finding their feet in international cricket. They have the best spin attack, some fast improving quicks and aggressive and quality batters at the top . They challenged Pakistan several times in the recent ODI series . If Afghanistan can put up a decent score and their spinners led by Rashid Khan get some grip from the pitch ,they will be a handful .

Afghanistan

Hashmatullah Shahidi (c), Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Riaz Hassan, Rahmat Shah, Najibullah Zadran, Mohammad Nabi, Ikram Alikhil, Rashid Khan, Gulbadin Naib, Karim Janat, Abdul Rahman, Sharafuddin Ashraf, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Noor Ahmad, Suliman Safi, Fazalhaq Farooqi.

Bangladesh

Bangladesh has the team to upset the big guns on their day but they continue to be inconsistent and do not seem to have the belief to win a multi nation tournament.  However they have quality players in their team with allrounder Shakib Al Hasan, Litton Das, veteran Mushfiqur Rahim,    fast improving quick Taskin Ahmed , talented bowling allrounder Mehdi Hasan Miraj etc.  Bangladesh can pose challenges if they play well consistently as a team

Nepal

Young cricketing nation Nepal has made good strides amongst the associate nations and is now creating history as this will be their first ever Asia Cup appearance in the main event . Cricket has become very popular in their country . Their star attraction is Sandeep Lamicchane,  the world  class leggie , who plays in various global leagues . While they are not expected to cause any upset ,  Nepal will try to gain invaluable experience from this event

Nepal

Sri Lanka

Finally the last Asian Cup champion (2022) and co hosts Sri Lanka  is unfortunately not their their best shape as 4 of their key first XI bowlers are injured . Chameera and Hasaranga were already ruled out of the tournament earlier and more recently talented Dilshan Madhusanka and  Lahiru Kumara are also in injury list which means Sri Lanka will have to play without most of their best  bowlers . While it is expected that their top batters will play but their lack of inconsistency has made  the team suffer in recent cricket matches . Due to injury issues Sri Lanka has finally named their squad for the Asia Cup after a long wait .

Sri Lanka

Dasun Shanaka (c), Pathum Nissanaka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Janith Perera, Kusal Mendis (vc), Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Maheesh Theekshana, Dunith Wellalage, Matheesha Pathirana, Kasun Rajitha, Dushan Hemantha, Binura Fernando, Pramod Madushan.
