Video : Neeraj Chopra enters world championship finals & qualifies for 2024 Olympics with 88.77 m throw

Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Neeraj Chopra has shown great form in the ongoing World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.  Neeraj has confirmed a place in the final of the men's javelin throw event.  Neeraj made a place in the final by throwing the javelin 88.77 meters in his first attempt.  The final match will be played on 27 August.

This is the best performance of Neeraj Chopra in the current season.  Earlier, his best performance in the current season was 88.67.  Along with this, Neeraj Chopra also qualified for Paris Olympics 2024.  The Paris Olympics will held from 26 July to 11 August 2024.  37 javelin throwers from all over the world including Neeraj Chopra have participated in this championship.

Neeraj Chopra was placed in Group-A, which also includes defending world champions Anderson Peters and Julian Peters.  Star players like Arshad Nadeem and Jacob Wadlech of Pakistan have been kept in Group-B.  The automatic qualifying mark for a place in the final of the javelin throw event is 83m, which was very easy for Neeraj Chopra.  The special aspect is that apart from Neeraj from Group-A, no one qualified automatically.

Neeraj Chopra won the silver medal in the 2022 World Championship in America and he is one of the contenders for the gold medal here this time.  By the way, no participant can be called a strong contender here.  If Chopra wins the gold medal in the World Championship, he will become only the second Indian after shooter Abhinav Bindra to win the yellow medal in the individual event of Olympics and World Championship.  Bindra became the first Indian to win an Olympic gold medal in an individual event in 2008, having achieved a top podium finish in the 10m air rifle event in Zagreb in 2006.

Prior to the World Championship, Chopra had played only two top-level events this season (Doha and Lausanne Diamond League) and finished first in both.  Between these two events, he also rested for a month due to injury.  After nearly two months of rest and training, Chopra said he was ready for the big event, which has the same status as the Olympics.  Other contenders for the gold medal include Jakub Wadlech of the Czech Republic, Julian Weber of Germany and defending champion Andersen Peters.

Neeraj Chopra made a throw of 88.77 meters in the first attempt to enter the final of the World Championship javelin event here on Friday and also qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024.  Tokyo Olympic champion Chopra threw the fourth best throw of his career.  He was in Group A in the qualification round.  The qualifying standard for the Paris Olympics was 85.50 metres.  The qualifying window is open from July 1.  Chopra's personal best throw is 89.94m which he threw at the Stockholm Diamond League on 30 June 2022.
