IPL24: CSK loses to Punjab 5 times in a row , playoffs spot in jeopardy
Chennai Super Kings lost home game to Punjab Kings rather unexpectedly . The Yellow Army fell quite a bit behind the other top teams in the race for the playoffs. On the other hand, Punjab still kept the hopes of playing in the playoffs after winning two consecutive matches.
Sam Curran's team won the match with a world record against KKR. On the other hand, Chennai Super Kings upset the devastating Hyderabad batting. Both teams went down with confidence in the game on Wednesday. However, Punjab showed their strength early in the match. Even though it was the opponent's home field, the Punjab spin duo of Rahul Chahar & Harpreet Brar pushed Chennai on the backfoot from the start. Jonny Bairstow, the hero of the last match, confirmed the victory of Punjab (Punjab Kings) with the bat playing another soarkling knock and well supported by an aggressive southpaw Riley Russouw.
Curran won the toss and elected to bowl on Wednesday. As soon as the power play ended, Chennai kept losing wickets. Rahane (29) departed after a bright cameo and Shivam Dube made a golden duck after he got a chance in the World Cup team being lbw to Brar trying to sweep . Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad tried to build an innings from one end but got no help at all from the other end. Jadeja (2) exited early. Sameer Rizvi (15) was also brought in as an impact sub to increase the run rate. It didn't help either. Chennai scored 162 runs at the end of 20 overs. It should be noted that Mahendra Singh Dhoni was undefeated in the current IPL. But he got out on the last ball of the innings being run out for 14. Gaikwad finally played on to Arshdeep for 62 wonderful runs . The spin duo of Chahar (2/16) and Brar (2/17) shared the spoils after bowling with great control . Rabada bowled with aggression to get 1 wicket.
Punjab did not have to face special difficulties while chasing the target of 163 runs. Prabsimran Singh (13) was dismissed in the power play but Bairstow took control of the innings. The English batsman smacked 46 in 30 balls for Punjab and formed a fast partnership with a breathtaking Riley Rossouw(43 in 23 balls) who made his first sizable contribution in this IPL . In the end, the Chennai bowlers tried but the victory remained elusive for the Yellow Army. Curran (26*) and Shashank Singh (25*) closed out the game without further alarms . With 10 points in 10 matches, Chennai made the fight to reach the playoffs more difficult. Punjab kept their playoffs hope marginally alive by reaching 8 points with 4 games to play.
