Doom in Iran as President dies in sudden copter crash
Iran's President Ibrahim Raoisi died after his chopper broke down. Raisi's co-passenger and Foreign Minister Hossain Amirabdollahian also died in the chopper. Although the news of the death of two people has not been officially reported by Iran's official news agency, the news agency Reuters reported this news citing administrative officials of that country.
After news of Raisi's death came to light, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a condolence message, "India stands by Iran in this sad time". In a post on his X (former Twitter) handle on Monday morning, Modi wrote, “Deeply saddened by the painful death of President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Raisi. His contribution to strengthening India-Iran bilateral relations will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to his family and the people of Iran."
It was learned on Sunday that Raisi's chopper crashed after hitting the mountain. Iran's foreign minister was in that chopper. A senior Iranian administration official told Reuters news agency that the chopper lost control while crossing a mountainous area. Visibility at the accident site was very poor due to heavy rain and thick fog, the official said. Citing a government official, Reuters reported that the condition of Iran's president and foreign minister is "dangerous". Another government official said on condition of anonymity, “We are not giving up now. But the area where the chopper collapsed is raising our concerns."
Earlier, Reuters reported that the copter that President Raisi was in was found. The news agency also provided pictures of the accident site. It can be seen that the broken part of the helicopter is lying on the foggy hill. Multiple cars are moving. Rescuers are going to the accident site on foot. The condition of the broken chopper is also deplorable. It was damaged by the accident. The chopper also caught fire. Multiple parts match when burned. The cabin of the chopper was the most damaged.
According to Iranian state media reports, Raisi was on a visit to Azerbaijan. He was accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs. The place where the accident took place is near the town of Zolfa on the border with Azerbaijan. The place is at least 600 kilometers northwest of the Iranian capital. It was also reported by the official media that efforts are being made to reach the accident site very quickly. A source in the Iranian administration, however, said heavy rains and dense fog were hampering the rescue efforts.
