Windies rattle SA twice to take unassailable 2-0 T20I series lead
South Africa is touring West Indies just before the T20 World Cup 2024. An exciting 3-match T20 series is being played between the two teams. The second match of the series was played at Sabina Park. After winning the first match, the hosts West Indies have won the second match as well and captured the series. They defeated South Africa by 16 runs in the second T20. Before the World Cup, the Caribbean team is looking in tremendous form, which is like an open warning to the other team. West Indies captain Brendan King decided to bat first in the second T20 against South Africa after winning the toss. In such a situation, the Caribbean team scored 207 runs for 7 wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. Roston Chase scored the highest unbeaten 67 runs for the team and played superb shots . He hit 7 fours and 2 sixes in his innings. Apart from this, King played a fluent innings of 36 and Kyle Mayers hit 32 runs. Andre Fletcher and Romario Shepherd contributed quickfire 29 and 26 runs respectively . Lungi Ngidi, Nkaba Peter and Andile Phehlukwayo took 2 wickets apiece for Africa. Fortuin also got a success.
Chasing the target of 208 runs, Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks gave South Africa a blistering start as both played some blistering shots . But as soon as they were out, Africa's entire batting line up failed. Together, they put 81 runs at blistering pace on the board in 5 overs. But the middle order flopped completely. De Kock played a breathtaking innings of 41 runs in 17 balls with the help of 4 fours and 4 sixes while Reeza Hendricks scored a dazzling 34 runs in 18 balls.
Captain Rassie van der Dussen scored 30 runs bur the middle order just could not drive home a great start and lost regular wickets . In such a situation, Africa could only score 191 runs for 7 wickets in 20 overs and lost the match by 16 runs. Gudakesh Moti took 3 wickets for West Indies bowling very well in the middle overs . Roston Chase, Akeal Hussain and Romario Shepherd also got one wicket each.
Earlier in the 1st T20I , West Indies beat South Africa by 28 runs after a Brendon King special. Skipper Brandon King, stepping in as captain for Rovman Powell, led with a blazing 79 off 45 balls. King played glorious strrokes all round the wicket . His partnership of 79 runs with Kyle Mayers, who isn't part of the T20 World Cup squad, was pivotal. The West Indies posted a strong start, reaching 109 for 1 by the halfway mark. However, they stumbled towards the end, losing six wickets for 40 runs between the 14th and final over, concluding their innings at 175 for 8.
South Africa's bowlers made a notable recovery, particularly Ottneil Baartman. Making his T20I debut, Baartman claimed an early wicket by dismissing Johnson Charles. Despite a potential left knee injury, he completed his spell, taking 3 for 26. Andile Phehlukwayo also impressed with three wickets in his four overs.
South Africa's top order faltered early, reduced to 35 for 3 by the fifth over. Neither Quinton de Kock nor Ryan Rickelton reached double figures. Needing 99 runs from the last 10 overs, Reeza Hendricks fought back with a breathtaking career-best 87 off 51 balls, but his dazzling efforts were too late. Gudakesh Motie's 3 for 25 and Obed McCoy's 2 for 15 sealed South Africa's fate, as they were bowled out for 147 in the final over.
