PSG Survives Aston Villa’s Comeback ,Barca withstood spirited Dortmund to reach Champions League semis
Paris Saint-Germain survived a dramatic Aston Villa resurgence to secure their spot in the Champions League semifinals, joining Barcelona after a night of high drama in Europe.
Both PSG and Barca appeared to have their ties wrapped up at halftime. Barcelona, holding a commanding 4-0 lead from the first leg, were managing their advantage against Borussia Dortmund. PSG, meanwhile, had built a seemingly insurmountable 5-1 aggregate lead over Aston Villa after a clinical first-half performance on Tuesday.
But the second half turned both matches into thrillers—none more so than the chaos that unfolded at Villa Park.
Aston Villa, undeterred by the deficit and roared on by a passionate home crowd, mounted a breathtaking comeback attempt. Two quick goals in the 55th and 57th minutes sent shockwaves through PSG’s ranks and ignited belief across the stadium. John McGinn and Ezri Konsa found the net in rapid succession, with Marcus Rashford playing a key role in unsettling the French defense.
Suddenly, what had looked like a routine passage to the next round became a test of nerve. PSG, rattled and on the ropes, were clinging to a fragile 5-4 aggregate lead. Villa continued to press with intensity and ambition. Tielemans had a chance to level the tie, and Konsa came agonizingly close with a diving header that narrowly missed.
But despite the onslaught, PSG held firm. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was crucial, making several key saves—none more important than denying former PSG attacker Marco Asensio in a one-on-one. The Parisians eventually regained composure in the final 15 minutes to see out the tie.
Barcelona, despite a 3-1 defeat in Dortmund, also progressed thanks to their dominant first-leg performance, winning the tie 5-3 on aggregate. They will now face either Inter Milan or Bayern Munich, with the second half of the quarterfinal draw to be decided on Wednesday.
But the real story of the night belonged to the underdogs. Dortmund and Villa both went down swinging, full of heart and resolve. Guirassy’s hat trick gave Barcelona a scare, while Villa's relentless second-half surge very nearly toppled a team unbeaten in Ligue 1 this season.
In the end, it’s PSG and Barca who move forward. But Tuesday night won’t be remembered for just the winners—it was the losing sides’ valiant efforts that left an indelible mark on the Champions League stage.
