IPL2025 : Punjab Kings Secure 5th Victory in IPL 2025, beat RCB in rain-hit tight clash
Punjab Kings continued their winning momentum in IPL 2025, registering their fifth win of the season. Under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, Punjab defeated the home team, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, by 5 wickets at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. The match was shortened to 14 overs per side due to rain, and once again, Bengaluru’s batting collapsed on their home ground, managing to score only 95 runs. In response, Punjab chased down the target comfortably in just 11 overs. The standout performers for Punjab were Yuzvendra Chahal and Nehal Wadhera.
Chinnaswamy’s Haunting Memory for RCB
The evening of Friday, April 18, brought yet another disappointment for Bengaluru. Interestingly, it was on this same date 17 years ago, in 2008, that the very first IPL match was played — also at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, with RCB as one of the teams. In that historic opener, RCB’s batting faltered badly, and they were bowled out for just 82 runs. This time, while the context was slightly different, the outcome bore an uncanny resemblance, with the team once again failing to put up a fight with the bat.
Chahal & Jansen Crush RCB’s Middle Order
Playing their third home game of the season, RCB once again lost the toss and were forced to bat first. Their troubles began early, losing both openers within the first three overs. Arshdeep Singh (2/23) removed Phil Salt (4) and Virat Kohli (1), setting the tone. Then came the combined assault of Marco Jansen (2/10) and Yuzvendra Chahal (2/11), who decimated the middle order and maintained a tight grip on the scoring rate.
Despite the collapse, Tim David fought back with a valiant unbeaten 50 off 26 balls, including three consecutive sixes in the final over — his first IPL half-century — helping RCB reach 95 runs.
Nehal Wadhera Anchors Punjab’s Chase
Punjab’s chase didn’t begin smoothly either, with Prabhsimran Singh (13) and Priyansh Arya (16) dismissed within the first four overs. Nevertheless, Punjab kept the scoreboard ticking and reached 50 runs in 7 overs. RCB briefly regained hope when Josh Hazlewood (3/14) struck in the 8th over, dismissing Shreyas Iyer (7) and Josh Inglis (14).
Just when the game seemed to tilt in RCB’s favor, Nehal Wadhera took charge. In back-to-back overs from Suyash Sharma, he smashed two sixes and two fours, scoring a quickfire 33 off 19 balls to bring Punjab back on track. Eventually, Punjab sealed the win in 12.1 overs, continuing their strong campaign.
