IPL2025 : Priyansh Arya demolish CSK with dazzling 100 as Punjab outplay CSK

Punjab Kings finally secured their first home win of IPL 2025 in emphatic fashion. Under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, Punjab bounced back strongly after their previous defeat to hand Chennai Super Kings an 18-run loss. The match, played on Sunday, April 8 at Mullanpur, saw a sensational century from 24-year-old opener Priyansh Arya, who stole the show with a blazing 102 off just 52 balls, smashing 7 fours and 9 sixes. His fireworks powered Punjab to a mammoth total of 219, which proved too much for Chennai, who could only manage 201 in response. With this loss, CSK have now slumped to their fourth consecutive defeat.

A Crucial Match for Both Teams

This clash was vital for both teams to get back to winning ways. While both sides were guilty of poor fielding, it was Punjab who made better use of the opportunities. Chennai dropped four catches, including two of Priyansh Arya, who was also given a lifeline on just the second ball after launching the first one for a six. Punjab too dropped four catches, but unlike Priyansh, Chennai’s batters failed to capitalize.

Priyansh Punishes Chennai

Opting to bat first, Punjab posted the highest-ever total on this ground, though it didn’t come easy. Priyansh set the tone early with two sixes in the first over, but wickets kept tumbling at the other end. By the end of the 8th over, Punjab had lost 5 wickets for just 85 runs, with the other batters contributing a mere 23 runs combined. Despite the collapse, Priyansh raced to a fifty off just 19 balls and then went berserk in the 13th over, smashing Matheesha Pathirana for 3 sixes and a four to reach his hundred in just 39 balls. Later, Shashank Singh (52*) and Marco Jansen (34*) stitched an unbeaten 65-run stand to take the total past 200.

Chennai's Chase Falls Short

Given their poor record over the past six years while chasing big totals, CSK were always facing an uphill task. Their opening duo of Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway provided a steady start, putting up 59 runs in the Powerplay without losing a wicket. However, the scoring rate wasn’t high enough. Rachin fell for 36 in the 7th over, followed by captain Ruturaj Gaikwad’s quick dismissal for just 1. Conway and Shivam Dube then stitched an 89-run partnership to revive the innings, but the required run rate kept climbing.

Conway managed to complete his half-century (69), but after Dube’s dismissal for 42, CSK made the surprising move of retiring Conway out in an attempt to accelerate the scoring. MS Dhoni then stepped up with some vintage hitting — 3 sixes and a four — sparking hope among fans. However, with 28 needed off the final over, it seemed improbable. Those hopes were dashed on the very first ball when Dhoni was dismissed for 27. Chennai ended on 201, falling 18 runs short.

It was a memorable night for Punjab Kings, while Chennai Super Kings now find themselves searching for answers after a string of losses.
