IPL2025 : Karun Nair brilliance in vain as DC loses to MI by 12 runs

Mumbai Indians finally put an end to their losing streak in IPL 2025 with a thrilling 12-run win over Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. In what was the first match of the season at this venue, the home team Delhi Capitals were aiming for their fifth consecutive win. For much of the game, Axar Patel’s side seemed to be in control, but an unexpected collapse in the 19th over, which saw three run-outs in a row, cost them the match. This marked Delhi’s first defeat of the season.

The high-scoring encounter took place on Sunday, April 13. Chasing a target of 206, Delhi Capitals looked well on track for a win till the 15th over. However, irresponsible shot selection in the final overs gave Mumbai Indians an opening, which they capitalized on to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. The collapse reached its peak in the 19th over, when, with just 15 runs needed from 9 balls and three wickets in hand, Delhi lost all three remaining wickets to consecutive run-outs.

Power-Packed Batting by Tilak and Naman

Mumbai Indians had earlier set a formidable target, posting 205 runs in their 20 overs. Tilak Varma led the charge with a brisk 59 off 33 balls, while Naman Dhir provided the finishing touch with a fiery 38 off just 17 deliveries. The duo added 62 runs in only 33 balls. Earlier in the innings, Suryakumar Yadav (40) and Ryan Rickelton (41) laid a strong foundation. For Delhi, Kuldeep Yadav once again emerged as the most effective bowler, conceding just 23 runs and taking two crucial wickets.

Delhi’s chase began on a shaky note as Jake Fraser-McGurk fell on the very first ball. However, impact substitute Karun Nair, playing his first IPL match in three years, turned the tide with a sensational knock of 89 off 40 balls, smashing 12 fours and 5 sixes. He particularly targeted Jasprit Bumrah, plundering 26 runs off just 9 balls from the ace pacer, including 2 sixes and 3 fours. Nair’s onslaught took Delhi to nearly 140 by the 12th over.

However, his dismissal to a brilliant delivery by Mitchell Santner triggered a collapse. Delhi’s middle order faltered, with Santner (2/43) and Karn Sharma (3/36) sharing five crucial wickets between them. Trent Boult’s tight 17th over, which went for just five runs, further built the pressure. Delhi needed 23 runs off the last two overs with only three wickets remaining. Ashutosh managed 10 runs off the first three balls, but chaos ensued immediately after as the next three deliveries resulted in three consecutive run-outs. Delhi were bowled out for 193, handing Mumbai their first win of the season and Delhi their first loss.
