IPL2025: Abhishek iconic 141 helps SRH ace 2nd highest ever chase in IPL vs Punjab Kings
In IPL 2025, Sunrisers Hyderabad finally unleashed their destructive form once again. Powered by a record-breaking century from Abhishek Sharma, SRH crushed Punjab Kings by 8 wickets to register their second win of the season. The match, played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, turned out to be one of the most explosive encounters in IPL history. Chasing a mammoth target of 245 runs, Sunrisers pulled off the victory with a staggering 9 balls to spare, thanks largely to Abhishek’s heroics.
Before this game, SRH had suffered four consecutive losses, despite starting their season by posting a massive 286-run total. Since then, the team’s batting had faltered repeatedly. But just when they needed a spark the most, the Sunrisers batters rose to the occasion, making light work of a daunting 245-run chase—with Abhishek Sharma leading the charge.
Priyansh and Shreyas Light Up the Punjab Innings
The match began with a bang from Punjab’s batting unit. Priyansh Arya, who had smashed a century off just 39 balls in the previous game, picked up right where he left off, hammering 36 runs off just 13 balls, including two back-to-back sixes off Mohammed Shami. Partnering with him, Prabhsimran Singh played a blistering knock of 42 runs in just 23 balls. The opening duo racked up a 66-run partnership in just 4 overs.
Then, skipper Shreyas Iyer took over. Despite a few dropped chances, he continued his exceptional form by slamming a fifty off just 21 balls, eventually scoring 82 off 36 deliveries. Though SRH managed to claw back in the 18th and 19th overs, Marcus Stoinis gave the finishing touch by smashing four consecutive sixes off Shami in the final over, taking Punjab to a formidable total of 245.
Given SRH’s recent form—they hadn’t crossed the 200-run mark in their last four matches—the target seemed out of reach. But if there was one team capable of such a chase, it was Sunrisers Hyderabad, and they proved it. Abhishek, who had a slow start to the season, came out blazing, hitting a half-century off just 19 balls. After a cautious start, Travis Head found his rhythm and brought up his fifty in 31 balls.
By the time Head (66) was dismissed on the second ball of the 13th over, the match was already in SRH's control. He and Abhishek stitched a breathtaking 171-run stand in just 12.2 overs—the highest partnership of the season. On the final ball of that over, Abhishek reached his maiden IPL century, bringing it up in just 40 balls.
Even after reaching his hundred, Abhishek didn’t let up. He went on to score a phenomenal 141 off just 55 balls, including 10 sixes and 14 fours, before getting out in the 17th over. Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan Kishan then wrapped up the chase, taking SRH to victory on the third ball of the 19th over. This became the second-highest successful run chase in IPL history.
