ISL 2024-25: Mohun Bagan SG Clinch Historic League Double with 2-1 extra time win over Bengaluru FC
Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) capped off a dream season by securing the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 Cup with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Bengaluru FC at the iconic Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan. Jamie Maclaren emerged the hero, netting the winner in extra time to help the Kolkata giants complete a remarkable League Double—having already secured the ISL Shield earlier this season.
This feat makes MBSG only the second club in ISL history, after Mumbai City FC in the 2020-21 season, to win both the Shield and the Cup in the same campaign. Remarkably, they also remained unbeaten at home throughout the season.
The home side made a lively start, urged on by a passionate crowd. Maclaren almost opened the scoring early on, but Bengaluru FC goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu pulled off a sharp save in the 9th minute. Anirudh Thapa continued to drive the hosts forward, but his effort from inside the box was blocked just in time.
Bengaluru responded with purpose midway through the first half. Alberto Noguera delivered a teasing ball for Sunil Chhetri, but the veteran striker couldn't finish. Edgar Mendez also saw a header saved by Vishal Kaith as both sides went into halftime goalless.
Bengaluru Take the Lead via an Own Goal
The second half sparked to life in the 49th minute when Bengaluru took the lead through an own goal by MBSG defender Alberto Rodriguez. Under pressure while trying to clear a cross from the right, Rodriguez inadvertently put the ball into his own net.
Just minutes later, MBSG nearly found the equaliser when Subhasish Bose won possession and set up Jason Cummings, whose left-footed strike forced another diving save from Sandhu.
Cummings Levels From the Spot
The breakthrough for MBSG finally came in the 72nd minute when Chinglensana Singh was penalized for a handball inside the box. Jason Cummings coolly converted the penalty, slotting the ball into the bottom left corner to make it 1-1.
As full-time approached, both sides pushed for a winner. Ashique Kuruniyan and Greg Stewart created late chances, but MBSG couldn’t find the back of the net, and the match headed into extra time.
Maclaren Seals the Deal in Extra Time
The decisive moment came in the 96th minute. With Bengaluru’s defence stretched under relentless pressure, Jamie Maclaren pounced on a loose ball inside the box and smashed it past Sandhu to give MBSG the lead. That strike proved enough as MBSG held firm to clinch a historic double and send their fans into wild celebrations.
It was a fitting end to a stellar season for Mohun Bagan SG—one that will be remembered for dominance, resilience, and a glorious home run.
