IPL 2025: Delhi Capitals edge out Rajasthan Royals in thrilling Super Over Clash
In a nail-biting encounter at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi Capitals clinched a dramatic victory over Rajasthan Royals in the first Super Over of the IPL 2025 season. Both teams ended their respective 20-over innings on an equal score of 188, pushing the game into a rare Super Over, where Delhi emerged victorious thanks to Mitchell Starc’s brilliant bowling and a composed finish by KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs.
Delhi’s Middle-Order Resurgence Powers 188
Opting to bat first, Delhi Capitals once again had a shaky start. Opener Jake Fraser-McGurk was dismissed early, followed by Karun Nair, who fell for a duck after facing just three deliveries. However, KL Rahul (38) and Abhishek Porel (49) steadied the innings with a 63-run partnership, albeit at a slow pace.
Momentum shifted when captain Axar Patel played a fiery cameo, smashing 34 runs off just 14 balls. Tristan Stubbs (34*) and Ashutosh Sharma (15*) added a quick 42 runs in the final three overs, propelling Delhi to a competitive total of 188 for 3.
Jaiswal-Rana Heroics Not Enough for Royals
Chasing 189, Rajasthan Royals got off to a flying start with openers Yashasvi Jaiswal (51) and captain Sanju Samson (31) taking the team past 60 in the powerplay. However, Samson was forced to retire hurt due to a rib injury, and Riyan Parag departed soon after.
Jaiswal continued his fine form with a second consecutive half-century, but his dismissal shifted the pressure to Nitish Rana. Rana responded with a blistering 51 off 28 balls, keeping the chase alive. He fell in the 18th over, leaving Shimron Hetmyer and Dhruv Jurel to finish the job. Despite their efforts, Rajasthan failed to score the required 9 runs in the final over bowled by Mitchell Starc, resulting in a tied match.
Starc’s Super Over Brilliance Seals the Deal
In the Super Over, Rajasthan sent Riyan Parag and Shimron Hetmyer to face Mitchell Starc, who bowled a near-perfect over. Rajasthan lost both wickets to run outs and managed just 11 runs.
Chasing 12 for victory, Delhi sent out KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs. Rahul started with a boundary, and Stubbs sealed the win with a towering six on the fourth ball, securing a memorable win for Delhi.
This victory marked Delhi Capitals’ fifth win of the season, while Rajasthan Royals suffered their third consecutive and fifth overall loss.
