IPL2025 : Krunal brilliance help RCB beat Delhi Capitals & top points table
Under the captaincy of Rajat Patidar, Royal Challengers Bengaluru secured a thrilling 6-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals at their home ground, marking their seventh win of the season and climbing to the top of the points table. Powered by a stellar all-round performance from Krunal Pandya, Bengaluru moved closer to securing a playoff berth, now sitting at 14 points from 10 matches.
The high-voltage clash was held at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday evening, April 27. All eyes were on whether Virat Kohli and Bengaluru could replicate the feat that Delhi and KL Rahul had achieved earlier this season at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. And they did — though with a twist: Krunal Pandya, not Kohli, played the match-winning anchor role, while Kohli contributed a steady innings.
Delhi’s stars fail to fire; Bhuvneshwar shines
After losing the toss, Delhi Capitals were asked to bat first. Opener Abishek Porel (28) gave them a brisk start, but Josh Hazlewood struck in the fourth over to dismiss him. In the very next over, Karun Nair was sent back by Yash Dayal. From there, Delhi struggled to maintain momentum. While Faf du Plessis (22) fell cheaply, KL Rahul (41) held his ground but couldn’t accelerate the scoring rate.
Krunal Pandya (1/28) claimed du Plessis’ wicket, while Hazlewood (2/36) bowled Delhi skipper Axar Patel. The 17th over proved decisive when Bhuvneshwar Kumar delivered a double blow, dismissing KL Rahul and impact player Ashutosh Sharma in quick succession. However, a late surge by Tristan Stubbs (34) and Vipraj Nigam (12) added crucial runs, lifting Delhi to a competitive total of 162. Bhuvneshwar finished as Bengaluru’s top bowler with 3 wickets.
Kohli and Krunal rescue Bengaluru after early blows
In response, Bengaluru’s new opener Jacob Bethell (12) started brightly but couldn’t last long on debut, falling in the third over. In the same over, Devdutt Padikkal departed for a duck, and skipper Rajat Patidar (6) was run out in the fourth over. Bengaluru found themselves reeling at 26 for 3 on a tricky pitch.
At that critical juncture, Virat Kohli and Krunal Pandya stepped up. Carefully rebuilding the innings, they took the score past 100 by the 14th over. Krunal then shifted gears, launching a flurry of sixes and registering his second IPL fifty — his first in nine years. Soon after, Kohli notched up his sixth half-century of the season. Their match-winning partnership of 119 runs off 84 balls stabilized the chase.
Though Kohli (51) fell in the 18th over, giving Delhi a glimmer of hope, Tim David (19*) sealed the deal with an explosive cameo — hammering three fours and a six in just five balls. Bengaluru wrapped up the match in 18.3 overs, with Krunal Pandya remaining unbeaten on a memorable 73 off 47 deliveries.
