IPL2025 : RCB edge out MI in a thriller, Patidar , Hardik impresses
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) made a strong comeback in IPL 2025 with a thrilling 12-run victory over Mumbai Indians (MI) on Monday. Playing at the Wankhede Stadium, RCB set a challenging target of 222 runs. In response, MI managed 209 runs for the loss of 9 wickets. This win marked RCB’s first victory at Wankhede against Mumbai in the last 10 years.
Tilak Varma (56 off 29 balls, 4 fours, 4 sixes) and Hardik Pandya (42 off 12 balls, 3 fours, 4 sixes) staged a brilliant counterattack, bringing MI back into the game. Hardik in particular played a breathtaking knock smashing the RCB bowlers to all parts to raise great hopes of a sensational win . However, their efforts fell just short. Krunal Pandya picked up four wickets, while Yash Dayal and Josh Hazlewood took two each. With this loss, Mumbai have now suffered defeats in four of their five matches this season. Meanwhile, RCB have won three out of their four matches.
Chasing the target, Mumbai got off to a shaky start. Yash Dayal bowled out Rohit Sharma (17) in the second over. Riyan Rickelton (17) departed in the fourth over. Will Jacks (22) and Suryakumar Yadav (28) added 41 runs for the third wicket. MI were struggling at 94/4 when Tilak and captain Hardik stepped up. The duo stitched an 89-run partnership off 34 balls for the fifth wicket. With 41 runs needed off the final 18 balls, the match was finely poised. However, Tilak fell in the 18th over, followed by Hardik in the 19th. Mumbai needed 19 runs in the final over, but Krunal Pandya turned the game around by conceding just 6 runs and taking three wickets — Mitchell Santner (8), Naman Dhir (11), and Deepak Chahar (0) — to seal the win for RCB.
Earlier, RCB posted 221/5 in their allotted 20 overs. Star batter Virat Kohli top-scored with 67 off 42 balls, hitting 8 boundaries and 2 sixes. For Mumbai, Trent Boult and Hardik Pandya took two wickets each, while Vignesh Puthur picked one. Returning to competitive cricket for the first time since January, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah went wicketless.
RCB, batting first after losing the toss, had a shaky start with Boult bowling out Phil Salt (4) in the first over. Kohli then built a solid 91-run partnership with an impressive Devdutt Padikkal (37 off 22) for the second wicket. He followed it up with a 48-run stand with captain Rajat Patidar for the third wicket. In the 15th over, Hardik removed both Kohli and Liam Livingstone (0). Patidar and Jitesh Sharma then took charge, adding 69 runs for the fifth wicket and pushing RCB past the 200-run mark. Patidar scored a dazzling 64 off 32 balls, including 5 fours and 4 sixes, while Jitesh remained unbeaten on a blistering 40 off 19 balls with 2 fours and 4 sixes. Boult conceded 57 runs in his four-over spell — his most expensive outing in IPL history.
