IPL2025 : LSG win a thriller by 2 runs as Rajasthan Royals choke again

Rajasthan Royals’ poor run in IPL 2025 continued as they suffered yet another heartbreaking defeat — their second consecutive loss from a winning position. In a nail-biting contest, Lucknow Super Giants edged past Rajasthan by just 2 runs on the final ball of the match. Just days after failing to chase 9 runs in the last over against Delhi Capitals, RR once again fell short by the same margin. This time, it was Avesh Khan (3/37) who snatched the win with his exceptional death bowling.

The match was played in Jaipur, where Lucknow batted first and posted a competitive total of 180. Opener Aiden Markram and middle-order batter Ayush Badoni led the charge with impressive half-centuries. In response, Yashasvi Jaiswal played a fine knock for Rajasthan, while 14-year-old debutant Vaibhav made a fiery start to his IPL career. However, once again, RR's finishers failed to close the game.

Markram, Badoni steady the innings before Samad’s late blitz

Lucknow had a shaky start after choosing to bat. Usually reliable opener Mitchell Marsh and the explosive Nicholas Pooran both departed early in the powerplay. However, Aiden Markram, finding form at the right time, anchored the innings with a fluent 66, notching up his third fifty of the season. Ayush Badoni also played a composed innings, scoring 50 and partnering with Markram for a vital 76-run stand.

Captain Rishabh Pant failed to deliver again, and LSG looked unlikely to reach a big total. But Abdul Samad had other plans, smashing 4 sixes in the final over to remain unbeaten on 30 and push the total to 180. For Rajasthan, spinner Wanindu Hasaranga claimed 2 wickets.

Explosive start by Vaibhav and Jaiswal

Rajasthan’s reply got off to a flying start, led by 14-year-old Vaibhav, who became the youngest debutant in IPL history. He announced his arrival in style, hitting a six off his very first ball and repeating the feat on the third. At the other end, Yashasvi Jaiswal returned to form, and the duo stitched a blazing 85-run partnership in just 8.4 overs, giving RR a solid platform.

However, momentum shifted as Vaibhav (34) and Nitish Rana (8) were dismissed in back-to-back overs. Still, Jaiswal and captain Riyan Parag kept Rajasthan in the hunt with a steady partnership.

Avesh Khan turns the game on its head

With just 25 runs needed off the last 3 overs, Rajasthan appeared in control. But Avesh Khan had other plans. He dismissed Jaiswal (74) with a beauty on the first ball of the 18th over and trapped Parag (39) LBW on the final delivery of the same over — two set batters gone in one over, shifting the momentum.

Though Shimron Hetmyer struck two boundaries in the 19th over, the pressure mounted. Rajasthan needed 9 runs off the final 6 balls. Avesh Khan delivered a perfect last over, bowling accurate yorkers in Mitchell Starc style, and gave away just 6 runs, securing a memorable win for Lucknow and leaving Rajasthan stranded at 178.
