IPL2025 : Delhi Capitals ride on great team effort to dismantle CSK & remain unbeaten this season
Delhi Capitals' impressive run in IPL 2025 continued, while five-time champions Chennai Super Kings remained stuck in a rough patch. In the 17th match of the season, held on Saturday, April 5, at Chennai’s Chepauk Stadium, Delhi Capitals delivered a strong all-round performance to defeat CSK by 25 runs. With this win, Delhi registered their third consecutive victory and climbed to the top of the points table. On the other hand, Chennai suffered their third straight loss.
This match was particularly special as MS Dhoni’s parents were present in the stadium for the first time to watch him play. However, Dhoni couldn’t finish the match in their presence. Adding to the significance, this was also Delhi’s first win over Chennai at Chepauk in 15 years.
KL Rahul steps up, Delhi posts 183
Batting first, Delhi Capitals posted a solid total of 183 runs in their 20 overs. With regular opener Faf du Plessis sidelined due to injury, KL Rahul was promoted to open the innings. He seized the opportunity and played a crucial knock under pressure, scoring 77 runs off 51 balls. Abishek Porel chipped in with a quick 33, while Tristan Stubbs (24*), captain Axar Patel (24), and Sameer Rizvi (20) all contributed valuable runs at good clip to set up a strong total.
Chennai's batting woes continue
Given CSK's struggles chasing big totals in recent years—they haven’t successfully chased a target above 180 since 2019—the task looked steep from the outset. Once again, their top order faltered during the Powerplay, and the new opening pair failed to impress. By the end of the sixth over, CSK had already lost three wickets, which soon became five by the 11th over with just 74 runs on the board.
None of the batters managed to find rhythm, and this struggle was most evident in the partnership between Vijay Shankar and MS Dhoni. Coming in during the third over, Shankar (69 off 54) found it tough to score freely and was handed three lifelines through dropped chances. Dhoni, who entered in the 11th over to loud cheers from fans hoping to see a classic finish, managed 30 off 26 balls. However, the duo couldn’t provide the acceleration CSK needed.
They shared an 84-run stand off 57 balls, but the slow pace of the partnership proved costly. In the end, Chennai could only manage 158 for 5 in their 20 overs, falling short by 25 runs.
