Myanmar earthquake death toll continues to rise as the life struggles continue

Myanmar is grappling with the aftermath of a powerful earthquake that struck on Friday, 28 March.

The 7.7-magnitude quake was felt beyond the country’s borders, affecting areas in Thailand and southwestern China. According to Myanmar’s military government, the disaster has claimed over 2,700 lives and left more than 4,500 people injured. These numbers are expected to rise as rescue operations continue. In Thailand, at least 21 fatalities have been reported.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located approximately 16 kilometers (10 miles) northwest of Sagaing, as confirmed by the US Geological Survey (USGS). This area lies close to Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, home to around 1.5 million residents, and about 200 kilometers (125 miles) north of the capital, Nay Pyi Taw.

The initial tremor struck at approximately 12:50 local time (06:20 GMT), followed by a second quake measuring 6.4 in magnitude just 12 minutes later, with its epicenter situated 18 kilometers south of Sagaing. Aftershocks have persisted in the days since, including a 5.1-magnitude tremor northwest of Mandalay on Sunday, described by a local resident as the strongest felt since the main quake.

As rescue teams reach more collapsed structures, the death toll is expected to increase further. Many casualties have been reported in Mandalay, with over 441 people still missing. The US Geological Survey’s projections suggest that the final number of fatalities could exceed 10,000, with economic losses potentially surpassing Myanmar’s annual output.

In Thailand, Bangkok has reported 21 deaths, including 14 people who perished when a high-rise building collapsed. Several individuals remain unaccounted for as search efforts continue.
