The Vaishno Devi Temple, located in the Trikuta Hills of Jammu & Kashmir, is one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in India. The temple is dedicated to Mata Vaishno Devi, believed to be a manifestation of the combined energies of Goddesses Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati.


1 History

According to Hindu mythology, Mata Vaishno Devi took human form and lived in the Trikuta Hills to meditate and uphold righteousness. A demon named Bhairavnath tried to pursue her, and to escape him, she took refuge in a cave. Eventually, she killed Bhairavnath just outside the cave, who then repented. Mata forgave him and blessed him, making his temple (Bhairav Temple) an essential part of the pilgrimage.

The shrine is believed to be over 700 years old, though references to the goddess appear in ancient texts like the Mahabharata.

2. Significance

  • Spiritual Power: The temple is one of the 108 Shakti Peethas, and devotees believe that Mata Vaishno Devi fulfills the wishes of those who come with a pure heart.
  • Navratri Celebrations: The shrine sees a massive influx of pilgrims during Navratri, a festival dedicated to the Divine Feminine.
  • Symbol of Faith: It attracts millions of pilgrims every year, making it one of the most visited religious sites in the world.


3. Temple Details

  • Main Shrine: The sanctum sanctorum houses the three natural rock formations, called Pindis, representing the three goddesses.
  • Location: It is located at an altitude of about 5,200 feet (1,585 meters) in the Trikuta Mountains.
  • Management: The shrine is managed by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB), which was established in 1986.
  • Facilities: The temple complex includes dormitories, food outlets, cloakrooms, medical facilities, and battery-operated cars for the elderly.

  • Darshan Timings:
    • Morning: 5 am to 12 pm 
    • Break: 12pm to 4 pm 
    • Evening: 4 pm to 9 pm
  • Aarti: Conducted twice during the day - morning & evening 
  • Note: Darshan is best during scheduled hours 


4. Connectivity

  • Nearest Town: Katra, in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, serves as the base camp for the pilgrimage.
  • By Road: Katra is well connected by road to Jammu, which is about 50 km away.
  • By Rail: The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Railway Station provides direct train connectivity from major Indian cities.
  • By Air: The nearest airport is the Jammu Airport, around 50 km from Katra.
  • Yatra Route: Pilgrims trek 13 km from Katra to the shrine, though options like helicopter services, ponies, palanquins, and battery cars are available.

5. Legacy

  • The Vaishno Devi pilgrimage is seen not only as a religious journey but also as a test of devotion and endurance.
  • The temple is a symbol of unity, attracting people of various regions, languages, and backgrounds.
