India vs Australia clashes in ODI World Cups - A flashback

 



India is to clash with  Australia in a mega  final match  in ODI World cup 2023 . The whole of cricket world is waiting for this big  match .  Both teams have played some exciting world cup matches between themselves.  


India and Australia faced each other 150 times in ODIs in which Australia is leading head to head by 83-57 with 10 no results . In ODI world cups India faced Australia 13 times and it is 8-5 in favour of Australia.  The last match was played at Chennai last month which turned out to be India & Australia 's opening game in this World cup campaign .


In 1983 World cup  these two nations clash for the first times in ODI World cups  , Australia crushed India by 162 runs in their 1st leg match as India conceded 300 plus to the Aussies  but India won the all important 2nd leg match by 118 runs to reach the semis with Binny and Madan Lal taking 4 wickets each to skittle out Australia for 129 after India put on a modest 247 batting 1st . 


In 1987 Australia beat India in the 1st leg group match by just 1 run at Chennai when Geoff Marsh got  110 and McDermott ripped through with four  middle order Indian wickets after Srikkant (70) & Sidhu (73) led India's chase .    However India beat Australia convincingly at Delhi in their second leg game by 56 runs after posting a huge 289  to confirm semis spot .


In 1992 World cup both teams played another epic match which  Australia won by 1 run at Brisbane  as India failed to chase down the revised  DLS target of 235 despite Azharuddin (93) & Manjrekar 's (47) heroic  efforts . Earlier Dean Jones (90) helped Australia to get 237


In 1996 at Mumbai brilliant batting by Tendulkar (90) was in vain as Australia beat India by 16 runs in a thriller after Mark Waugh (126) ton took Aussies to 258 but India fell short being 242 all out . 


In 1999 & 2003 World cups , Australia beat India in all 3 matches convincingly in total domination including 2003 final when Ponting smashed 140 notout . In 1999 Australia scored 282 ( Mark Waugh 83) but India lost early wickets and finished at 205 with Ajay Jadeja getting 100 n o.  In 2003 group game India were skittled out for 125 with Lee and Gillespie taking 3 wickets each and Australia chased down for a 9 wicket win . In the final , Australia amassed 359/2 due to Ponting (140*) and Martyn (88*) blitzkrieg and then knocked over India for 234 for a 125 run win.  



India finally beat Australia in an exciting match  in the 2011 quarter finals due to Yuvraj Singh all round show (57* & 2 wickets ) after Ponting 104 propelled Aussies to 260 .


Australia extracted sweet revenge in 2015 semis with a convincing win due to Steve Smith 105 & Finch 83  . Aussies amassed 328 and then had restricted India to 233 for a 95 run win. 


In the 2019 World cup Shikhar Dhawan 117 saw India beat Australia by 36 runs in a high scoring game ( India  352/5 , Australia 316) to set the head to head world cup scoreline at 8-4 in favour of Australia .


As for their 13th World cup clash at Chennai , India playing at home skitted out Australia for 199 and then winning by 6 wickets with Rahul (97*) & Kohli (85) rescuing India from 3/3 .  So now the head to head in world cup is Australia 8  : India 5 .
