CWC2023 : Afghanistan outclasses timid Netherlands & keep semis hopes alivel

 


Afghanistan's chances of playing the semi-finals of the World Cup are brighter.  Hasmatullah Shahidi's side picked up their fourth win of the competition by beating Netherlands by 7 wickets in Lucknow on Friday.  Batting first, Netherlands made 179 runs.  In reply, Afghans scored 181 runs for 3 wickets in 31.3 overs.  As a result of this victory, Afghanistan moved up to the fifth place in the points table of the World Cup.  Pakistan has gone  down to number six.  Mohammad Nabi played an important role with the ball in Afghanistan's victory against the Netherlands.  The Afghan captain himself did the same with the bat.


 Netherlands captain Scott Edwards won the toss and decided to bat first.  But the Netherlands batters did not succeed in front of Afghanistan's spin attack.  Sibrand Engelbrecht scored the highest run for the team at number four.  He made 58 runs off 86 balls.  Hit 6 fours.  Apart from this, the opener Max O'Dowd got runs worth mentioning.  An innings of 42 runs from 40 balls came from his bat.  He hit 9 fours.  Colin Ackerman's contribution at number three was 29 off 35 balls with 4 fours.  Apart from this, none of the Netherlands' batsmen could settle within 22 yards in front of Afghanistan's bowling attack and there were 4 run outs in the innings . 


 Rashid Khan did not get a wicket even though he bowled that day.  However, Nabi showed his skills .  The experienced all-rounder took 3 wickets with 28 runs. Young  Noor Ahmed took 2 wickets for 31 runs.  Mujeebur Rahman took 1 wicket with 40 runs.


Chasing a target of 180 to win, Afghanistan ended the game in 31.3 overs.  Two openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz (10) and Ibrahim Zadran (20) did not start well, but the Afghans did not have a problem.  Rehmat Shah at number three and skipper Shahidi at number four led the team's innings.  They scored 74 runs in the third wicket pair.  Rahmat scored a classy 52 runs off 54 balls.  Hit 8 fours.  On the other hand, Shahidi left the field after  winning the match .  He remained unbeaten with 56 off 64 balls.  6 fours came from his bat.  In the end Azmatullah Omarzai was with him at 22 yards.  He remained unbeaten on 31 off 28 balls with 3 fours.  Shakib Zulfiqar was the most successful of the Netherlands bowlers with 1 wicket for 25 runs.


 The win over the Netherlands boosted Afghanistan's World Cup semi-final hopes.  Like New Zealand, Afghans have 8 points after playing seven matches.  They are fifth in net run rate.  The Kiwis have a net run rate of 0.484.  Afghans -0.330.  After playing the same number of matches, Babar collected 6 points.  Pakistan Net Run Rate -0.024.
