Tennis : Djokovic eases past Dimitrov to win Paris masters

After surviving 3 gruelling back to back three setters on 3 consecutive days , Novak Djokovic put up a more straightforward display by easing past Bulgaria's 32 year old  Gregor Dimitrov in two straight sets to win a record extending 7th title at the ATP 1000 masters event at Rolex Paris masters.

The match lasted 98 minutes and Djokovic's solid baseline play was too good for Dimitrov who was first broken in the 7th game of the first set . That decisive break helped Djokovic to take the first set 6-4 .

The 2nd set also went on similar lines and Djokovic's early break at 3-2 was enough for the Serb to take control and finally win  6-4 , 6-3.

With this win , Djokovic new leads Dimitrov 12-1 in their head to head clashes , a very one sided rivalry indeed .

Though the final was a onesided affair , Djokovic was ruthlessly challenged in the previous 3 rounds on back to back 3 set wins . It was his determination &  motivation that got him through those tough matches.  The is what he said after the final:

It’s incredible. To be able to win it after quite challenging circumstances for me this week, basically, coming back from the brink of losing three matches in a row, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I was very close to losing those matches and somehow managed to find an extra gear when it was needed.

“Today, I think we both were quite tight at the beginning, and I could see that he was running out of gas a little bit. Myself as well, but I somehow managed to find an extra shot over the net. I think the match was closer than the scoreline indicates, but another amazing win for me. I’m very proud of this one, considering what I’ve been through this week.”

With this win Djokovic now shifts focus to the season ending ATP competition at Turin where 8 top players will play in the league stage . Djokovic is now well poised to end 2023 as the world number 1 .
