CWC2023 : India crush Sri Lanka by 302 runs after another lethal pace blitz

 



India repeated their Asia Cup final performance and handed Sri Lanka another  royal hammering  at Mumbai today in an important group game of the World cup . After piling up an imposing 357 /7  , the Indian quicks ripped apart the fragile Sri Lanka batting lineup and skittled them out for a mere 55 runs bringing back the horror scenes of Asia Cup 2023 . 


Kusal Mendis won the toss and invited India to bat first.  Rohit Sharma (4) did not get runs at home.  As the skipper got out on the second ball of the match - his off stump uprooted by Madhusanka , there was an uproar in the Wankhede gallery.  It was quickly overcome by Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill.  The Sri Lankan fielders dropped both Gill & Kohli very early.    Both the batters gradually got the measure of the pitch and played cricketing shots to score their runs , picking singles and punishing loose balls as both played some glorious drives . Kohli-Shubman scored 189 runs for the second wicket.  Kohli scored 88 runs.  He hit 11 fours in an innings of 94 balls.  At the other end of the wicket came an innings of 92 runs off 92 balls from Shubman's bat.  He decorated his innings with 11 fours and 2 sixes.  Sri Lanka's best bowler Dilshan Madushanka did not allow both of them to score a century as Gill edged an attempted ramp shot and Kohli played an uppish drive .



 However, the Indian camp got more joy from  Shreyas Iyer.  He was the only Indian batsman who was not getting runs.  The captain of Kolkata Knight Riders was seen in a familiar mood at home.  Sri Lanka's bowling attack was also blunted in front of Shreyas in Wankhede's 22 yards.  With the help of 3 fours and 6 sixes, his spectacular innings of 82 runs from 56 balls took India's  score out of Sri Lanka's reach.  He was also dismissed by Madushanka.  Like Rohit, Suryakumar Yadav also did not get a run at home (12).  He was also dismissed by Madushanka who took 5 wickets .  At the end of the Indian innings, Ravindra Jadeja's innings of 35 runs off 24 balls put the cherry on the cake.  Rohit's 'ruthless' India left Sri Lanka with 357 runs for 8 wickets.



In reply Sri Lanka were shell shocked from the moment they started their innings . Bumrah took the wicket on the first ball of Sri Lanka's innings getting Nissanka (0) lbw .  In the second over, Siraj also picked up a wicket with the first ball getting Karunaratne lbw for 0 . Soon after Kusal Mendis (1) was bowled by Siraj and Samaravikrama was caught in the slips again off Siraj for 0 . 


Charith Asalanka (1) and veteran  Angelo Mathews (12) batted for a while before Shami took over getting Asalanka caught at point and Mathews bowled . After which it was a matter of time before Sri Lanka innings folded up for a meagre 55 runs . Shami took 5/18 , Siraj got 3/16 , Bumrah took 1 wicket  and Jadeja took the final wicket .  Thus after the Asia Cup final horror show Sri Lanka repeated the act in identical fashion in the World cup game . 


With this huge 302 run win India have now qualified for the semis and their NRR is now very close to the South African NRR . South Africa and India will face at Kolkata on 5th November which promises to be a mouth watering contest for the top spot in the league stage.
