In the first Test match between South Africa and Sri Lanka, South Africa appears to be on the verge of victory. On the third day, powered by centuries from Temba Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs, South Africa set a daunting target of 516 runs for Sri Lanka. By the end of the day, Sri Lanka was struggling at 103/5, far from the halfway mark of the required runs.
On the third day, Bavuma and Stubbs resumed the innings for South Africa, building a remarkable partnership of over 200 runs. Stubbs (122) reached his century off 183 balls, hitting 7 fours and 2 sixes, while Bavuma completed his hundred in 202 deliveries & then was lbw for 113. South Africa declared after scoring 366 runs in their second innings, leaving Sri Lanka a mammoth target.
For Sri Lanka, Prabath Jayasuriya claimed two wickets, and Vishwa Fernando picked up one. However, the batting lineup faltered early in their chase. Opener Pathum Nissanka managed 23 runs after playing a few gorgeous shots , while Dimuth Karunaratne fell cheaply for 4 caught in the slips . Nissanka was dismissed by Coetzee lbw , while Rabada took Karunaratne's wicket.
Subsequent batsmen also failed to deliver significant contributions. Angelo Mathews scored 25, Kamindu Mendis added 10, and Prabath Jayasuriya managed just 1. At stumps, Dinesh Chandimal remained unbeaten on 29, with Dhananjaya de Silva yet to score. With five wickets down and still needing 413 runs to win, Sri Lanka faces a steep uphill battle that seems nearly impossible.
