New Zealand on the verge of losing 1st test vs England

The New Zealand team, which defeated India in a three-match Test series on their home turf, now finds itself in trouble. Playing against England in Christchurch, New Zealand is on the back foot. By the end of the third day’s play, New Zealand had reached 155 for six in their second innings, managing a slender lead of just four runs.

England’s First Innings Highlights

England began the day at 319 for five, with Harry Brook and Ben Stokes continuing the innings. The pair ensured England posted a strong total. At 381, Harry Brook was dismissed by Matt Henry, caught behind by Tom Blundell. Chris Woakes followed soon after, falling to Tim Southee for just one run.

Gus Atkinson contributed a crucial 48 runs off 36 balls, hitting four boundaries and two sixes, before being dismissed by Smith at 445. Ben Stokes, nearing a century, was sent back by Henry after scoring a well-crafted 80 off 146 balls, including nine fours. Henry wrapped up England’s innings by dismissing Shoaib Bashir, with Brydon Carse remaining unbeaten on 33.

For New Zealand, Matt Henry took four wickets, while Smith claimed three. Tim Southee picked up two, and Will O’Rourke secured one.

New Zealand’s Batting Struggles

Trailing by 151 runs, New Zealand needed a strong second-innings performance but failed to deliver. Tom Latham was dismissed in the third over for just one. Devon Conway managed only eight runs. Kane Williamson stood firm at one end, but wickets kept tumbling at the other.

Rachin Ravindra added 24 runs, while Tom Blundell failed to open his account. Glenn Phillips could only score 19 before departing. Williamson, however, batted brilliantly, completing 9,000 Test runs during his innings. He scored 61 runs off 86 balls, hitting seven boundaries, but missed out on a century.

Although New Zealand managed to surpass England’s total, they are unlikely to set a challenging target. The team’s hopes now rest largely on Daryl Mitchell.

England’s Bowling Performance
