Indian quicks reduce Aussies to 12/3 in 2nd innings after Jaiswal , Kohli 100s in Perth test
India reached a position of great strength on day 3 as they have set Australia a huge 4th innings target of 534 to win and already have the hosts tottering at 12/3 at the end of day 3 and therefore is all set to wrap up the 1st set to lead the series .
The day started with India on 172/0 and Jaiswal close to his 100. The southpaw finally got his 100 with a ramp shot over the keeper off a bouncer for a six . KL Rahul was gradually moving towards 3 figures till finally at 77 he edged Starc to Carey soon after the first wicket stand reached 201 . Paddikal batted long for his 25 till Hazlewood dismissed him caught in the slips . Jaiswal who was looking set for a double hundred was finally dismissed in the second session for a mammoth 161 being caught at point off Mitch Marsh .
Kohli looked more calm in the 2nd innings . With India well ahead Kohli batted well not over committing himself too much on the frontfoot as he rotated strike against a tired Aussie bowling attack . Meanwhile two more quick wickets fell after Jaiswal dismissal with Pant stumped off Lyon for 1 and Jurel lbw to Cummins for 1 .
However Washington Sundar (29) & Kohli batted steadily before Sundar departed trying to hit Lyon . Kohli hit a superb upper cut six off Starc as he gained in confidence . After Sundar departure Nitish Reddy came out and with quick runs needed for declaration the young all rounder smashed a few impressive boundaries & big sixes to race to 38 off 27 balls while Kohli swept and reverse swept Lyon for 4s enroute to his 100 which he reached off a flick of Labuschagne for a 4 after which Bumrah declared at 487/6 .
Lyon picked 2 wickets while the pacers took 1 each . The mammoth opening stand had taken the sting out of the Aussie bowling attack which helped the Indian middle order to play freely later .
With 534 to win , a tired Australia batted in the last half hour and was completely rattled by Bumrah again as he had debutant Mcsweeney lbw for 0 with a ball that kept low . Pat Cummins himself came out as the nightwatchman but failed to survive being caught by Kohli off Siraj and in the final over of the day Bumrah had Labuschagne lbw for 3 as the batter shouldered arms . Khawaja survived the day but Australia were already reeling at 12/3 as a fourth day finish looks on the cards with India poised to take the series lead .
