Cummins rescue Aussies vs Pak in 1st ODI after main batters stumble in chase
Be it a Test or a One-Day match, Pat Cummins often steps up as the savior when needed. On Monday, he did it once again. In a moment of crisis, Cummins' batting led Australia to victory. In the first One-Day International, Australia defeated Pakistan by 2 wickets. Pakistan, batting first, was all out for 203 runs. In response, Australia chased down the target in 33.3 overs.
Winning the toss, Australia opted to bowl first. Pakistan lost their opener Saim Ayub (1) early played on to Starc , and soon after, Abdullah Shafique (12) departed as well edging Starc to keeper in trying to leave the ball . The team was then steadied by the experienced pair of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan. Returning to the squad after a break, Babar looked comfortable , played some crisp shots and, together with Rizwan, played steadily . However, Babar was dismissed at 37 bowled by a ball kept low from Zampa , followed by Kamran Ghulam (5) shortly after who was dismissed by a quick short ball from Cummins . Agha Salman (12) also failed to score significantly.
When Rizwan (44) was dismissed, Pakistan found themselves in deep trouble at 117 for 6. The bowlers then provided some support, with Shaheen Afridi (24) and Naseem Shah (40) helping Pakistan cross the 200-run mark by playing some breathtaking shots that included several 4s . Starc took 3 wickets for Australia.
However, the target was insufficient to defeat Australia. Just like Pakistan, Australia also had a shaky start. Openers Matthew Short (1) and Jake Fraser-McGurk (16) couldn’t stay long at the crease. Australia's most substantial partnership came for the third wicket, where Steve Smith (44) and Josh Inglis (49) put together 85 runs and both played scintillating strokes all around the ground . After they were dismissed, Australia kept losing wickets and found themselves at 139 for 6 though many overs were left .
At that point, Cummins took charge of the situation. Displaying the resilience expected of a captain, he scored an unbeaten 32 off 31 balls, including four boundaries, guiding his team to victory in the company of Abbott and Starc.
