Fraud : Cyber Police in MP India, rescues Businessman from Six-Hour ‘Digital Captivity’ by scammers

In a unique and potentially first-of-its-kind operation, Madhya Pradesh's Cyber Police successfully rescued a man held in "digital captivity" by cyber scammers for over six hours, preventing a multi-crore fraud in Bhopal.

According to Additional Director General of State Cyber Cell, Yogesh Deshmukh, the incident unfolded when authorities received a tip-off about Vivek Oberoi, a resident of Bhopal's Arera Colony and a Dubai-based corporate entrepreneur. Oberoi was reportedly subjected to intense psychological pressure from scammers posing as senior officials and was confined within a room in his own house.

Deputy Inspector General M Yusuf Qureshi was promptly assigned to lead a team to intervene. Upon arrival, they discovered that Oberoi had been coerced into a "digital arrest" scenario where cybercriminals falsely accused him of financial crimes. The scammers impersonated representatives from prominent agencies, including the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Mumbai Cyber Crime Branch, and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), using fabricated identities like “TRAI Legal Cell Officer,” “Cyber Crime Branch Officer SI Vikram Singh,” and “CBI Officer IPS DCP Mahesh Kalwania.”

The scammers directed Oberoi to download Skype, where they conducted a staged interrogation, claiming he was under investigation for illegal financial activity linked to his Aadhaar. To intimidate him further, they ordered him to refrain from contacting his family, threatening legal action if he did not comply.

As the virtual confinement continued, the Cyber Police team arrived at Oberoi’s residence and joined the call, demanding the scammers prove their identities. The impostors immediately disconnected the call, abruptly ending Oberoi’s ordeal.

Police clarified to Oberoi that the concept of a "digital arrest" holds no legal standing in India and assured him that the allegations were entirely fictitious. Relieved and grateful, Oberoi expressed that he was on the verge of a significant financial loss and had nearly canceled a vital flight before the intervention. After the rescue, he was able to catch his flight as planned.

This case highlights the evolving tactics used by cybercriminals to exploit digital vulnerabilities, with Madhya Pradesh’s Cyber Police quick to act in averting a significant crime.
