Dudley Nourse born 10 November 1910 in Durban South Africa, was renowned for his courageous, technically sound, and patient batting style. A right-handed batsman, Nourse was known for his focus, resilience, and ability to withstand pressure. He was especially recognized for his determination and was considered one of the hardest players to dismiss in his era. Nourse had a classical technique, with a wide range of strokes that made him one of South Africa's finest batsmen.

Career Highlights

1. Test Career: Nourse represented South Africa in 34 Test matches between 1935 and 1951, scoring 2,960 runs at an average of 53.81, with 9 centuries and 14 half-centuries. One of his most remarkable innings was a gritty 231 against Australia in 1950, which he played with a broken finger, demonstrating immense determination and grit.  His career unfortunately  coincided with the World War II as a result of which like his contemporaries Nourse missed out on several years of international  cricket.  

2. First-Class Career: In first-class cricket, Nourse had an illustrious career, scoring a mammoth 12472  runs in 175 matches , including 41 centuries and 54 fifties . Representing Natal in South African domestic cricket, he became a consistent and reliable performer and was often the mainstay of the South African batting lineup.

3. Captaincy: Nourse captained South Africa in the latter part of his career, including the famous 1951 tour to England. As captain, he led with a focus on building a resilient and disciplined team, setting a standard for future generations.

231 vs Australia, 1950, Johannesburg: This was his finest innings, played under challenging conditions, including an injured finger. It showcased his resilience and made him a national hero.

114 vs England, 1935, Lord’s: In his debut series, Nourse scored a masterful 114, highlighting his potential as one of South Africa’s future stars.

208 vs England, 1938:* A commanding double-century that established him as a player of the highest caliber.
