Man in West Bengal, India Loses Rs 4.1 Lakh in Online Cab Booking Scam in Karnataka

A man from West Bengal recently lost Rs 4.1 lakh to an online scam while trying to book a cab in Udupi, Karnataka. The victim was reportedly duped into entering his card information on a fake payment page connected to a fraudulent car rental website that appeared in his Google search results.

According to reports, the man searched for car rental services online and clicked on a link for a company called "Shakti Car Rentals." Shortly afterward, he received a call from someone claiming to be a company representative, identifying himself as Rohit Sharma. The caller instructed him to pay a Rs 150 registration fee via the website as a booking token.

After several attempts to make the payment using both his debit and credit cards, the victim noted he didn’t receive any OTPs (one-time passwords) to complete the transaction. However, soon afterward, he started receiving alerts from his banks indicating that substantial amounts had been debited from his accounts.

The victim reported that Rs 3.3 lakh was deducted from his SBI credit card, and Rs 80,056 from his Canara Bank debit card, totaling Rs 4.1 lakh. He has filed a complaint with the Udupi Town police, and an investigation into the scam is currently underway.
