Jansen (7/13) destroys Sri Lanka as South Africa dominate 1st test
South Africa has started playing a new test series vs Sri Lanka at home with the hope of reaching the WTC 2025 final and in just two days are all over the tourists .
On a rain shortened day 1 the Proteas batting first laboured to 80/4 . The openers were dismissed cheaply by the Fernando bowlers while Lahiru Kumara dismissed the Stubbs (16) had Bedingham 's stumps cartwheeling- a sight to behold . Bavuma batted through day one trying to provide solidity.
On the second day of the first Test between Sri Lanka and South Africa, the Proteas secured a commanding 281-run lead. The day witnessed a flurry of wickets, with a total of 19 falling. South Africa, having lost four wickets on Day 1, resumed their innings on the second day but were bowled out for 191, adding only 80 runs. Sri Lanka, in response, collapsed , losing all 10 wickets for just 46 runs. South Africa then began their second innings and lost three wickets by stumps.
South Africa started Day 2 with six wickets in hand. In the first innings, Temba Bavuma played a crucial role, scoring a gritty 70 off 117 balls to steer his side to a respectable total. Keshav Maharaj also chipped in with 24 runs. Bavuma himself played some superb shots including an airbourne upper cut & a straight drive that went for 4 after hitting the stumps . However, the rest of the batting lineup couldn’t offer much resistance. For the tourists Lahiru Kumara bowled fast & tooķ 3 wickets . Ashita Fernando took 3 wickets while Binura Fernando & Prabhat Jayasurya took 2 wickets each .
Then it was a Marco Jansen show as Sri Lanka played their 1st innings . Rabada started off by getting Karunaratne caught in the slips and then Jansen took over getting Nissanka (3) caught in the slips and Chandimal (0) bowled by a delivery that cut back after angling across the righthander .
Mathews (1) was dismissed by Jansem cheaply and the Coetzee had the prolific rungetter and Sri Lanka's new batting sensational Kamindu Mendis (13) caught in the slips . Coetzee had Kusal Mendis lbw for 0 while Jansen bowled Dhananjay DeSilva(7). Jansen ran through the tail to claim a sensational 7/13 as Sri Lanka were skittled out for a stunning 42 runs and concede a huge 149 run lead to the hosts .
In their second innings, South Africa showed more intent. Opener Tony de Zorzi fell for 17, while Aiden Markram played a solid knock of 47. By the close of play, Tristan Stubbs (17*) and Temba Bavuma (24*) were at the crease, building on the team’s already substantial lead. With a lead of 281 runs, South Africa is in a commanding position, leaving Sri Lanka with an uphill battle. Sri Lankan bowlers will aim to wrap up the South African innings quickly, but a victory for the visitors appears increasingly unlikely from this stage.
