Maxwell powers Aussies to big win over Pakistan in 1st T20I

Pakistan entered the T20 series against Australia after winning the one-day series, but their start didn’t go as planned. In the first T20 match, they suffered a 29-run loss to Australia, largely due to batting failures.

Due to rain, the game was interrupted for some time, leading to a reduction in overs, and it was announced that both teams would play seven overs each. Australia didn’t have a strong start with the bat as Pakistan’s pacers effectively utilized the pace and bounce of the Brisbane pitch. Matthew Short and Jake Fraser-McGurk struggled to score.

It was Glenn Maxwell who carried Australia’s innings. His reverse-sweeps for sixes against Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf hinted that IPL teams might consider him closely in the upcoming auction. Maxwell played a quick 43-run innings off 19 balls, hitting five fours and three sixes. Marcus Stoinis gave Australia a strong finish, hitting a six and a four off the last two balls. Australia ended their seven overs at 93 for 4, with Stoinis remaining unbeaten on 21 off just seven balls.

Chasing 94 in seven overs was challenging but not impossible in T20 cricket. However, Pakistan’s batters made it look unachievable. They hurried and played reckless shots, leading to quick dismissals. None of the top six batters managed to reach double figures, with captain Mohammad Rizwan getting out for zero and Babar Azam departing for just three runs. By 3.2 overs, Pakistan had lost six wickets for just 24 runs, making a victory nearly impossible.

Lower-order batsmen tried to put up a fight, with Haseebullah Khan scoring 12, Abbas Afridi 20, and Shaheen Afridi 11. However, Pakistan’s innings ended at 64 for 9 in seven overs. Australian bowlers Xavier Bartlett and Nathan Ellis stood out, each taking three wickets.
