Ind v Aus Tests : India's top 5 wicket takers in Australia

The India-Australia rivalry has long been defined by fierce competition and exceptional performances, with Australia often dominating thanks to their world-class bowling attack. However, India’s bowlers—both pacers and spinners—have also risen to the occasion, leaving an indelible mark on the rivalry. Over the years, some Indian bowlers have delivered game-changing performances on Australian soil, shaping the narrative of the contest.

As we approach the much-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, let’s revisit five Indian bowlers whose exceptional wicket-taking abilities redefined Test cricket for India in Australia.

Kapil Dev

India’s legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev leads the chart as the highest wicket-taker for India in Australia, with 51 scalps from 11 matches. Kapil was instrumental in turning the tide during the 1980-81 Melbourne Test, where his incredible spell of 5/28—despite battling injury—secured a historic victory for India.

In subsequent tours, Kapil continued to excel, taking 8/106 in Adelaide in 1985 and claiming a career-best 25 wickets during the 1991-92 series. His remarkable contributions laid a strong foundation for future Indian pacers to thrive on the fast and bouncy Australian pitches.

Anil Kumble

Anil Kumble, India’s greatest wicket-taker in Test cricket, had significant success in Australia, bagging 49 wickets from 10 matches across three tours (1999-2008). Kumble’s ability to extract bounce and his relentless consistency made him a formidable force on Australian soil, even in conditions not naturally suited to spinners.

The 2007-08 series highlighted Kumble's prowess, as he led both as captain and bowler, claiming 20 wickets across four Tests. His adaptability and skill ensured he remained a constant threat to Australian batters throughout his career.

Ravichandran Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin, one of India’s most accomplished modern-day spinners, has taken 39 wickets in 10 Tests against Australia. His standout performances came during the 2020-21 series, where his sharp turn, disciplined line, and ability to contain runs were pivotal in India’s historic series victory.

Ashwin’s frequent dismissals of Steve Smith during that series remain a highlight, showcasing his tactical brilliance. Even at 38, Ashwin continues to be an integral part of India’s Test team, proving his longevity and unmatched skill in the longest format.

Bishan Singh Bedi

Bishan Singh Bedi, one of India’s finest left-arm spinners, was a master of flight and turn. In just seven Tests in Australia, Bedi claimed 35 wickets, tormenting Australian batters with his craft and control.

His most memorable performance came during the 1977-78 series, where as a captain his variations in bowling and ability to restrict runs made him a key figure in India’s bowling lineup and helped India to square the series from 0-2 down though the Aussies had the last laught by winning the final test .  Bedi’s contributions remain a testament to India’s rich tradition of spin bowling, even on pitches that favored pace.

Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah, one of India’s most promising modern-day pacers, has already etched his name in the annals of Indian cricket with 32 wickets in just seven Tests in Australia. Known for his lethal pace, precision, and unplayable yorkers, Bumrah has been a constant menace for Australian batters.

His finest performance came during the 2018-19 series, where he picked up 21 wickets, including a sensational 6/33 in Melbourne that played a crucial role in India’s victory. Again he repeated his feat at MCG in 2020 in India's comeback test after being blown away at Adelaide . Bumrah’s rapid rise and consistent success against Australia mark him as one of the best pacers India has produced in recent times.

These bowlers have not only delivered exceptional performances but have also carried India’s hopes in one of cricket’s most challenging rivalries. Their ability to adapt, innovate, and deliver under pressure has left an enduring legacy, ensuring India’s place as a competitive force in Australian conditions.
